For Honeybunch RE Cardio?

Honeybunch, I noticed that you've advised other posters to do more low intensity cardio. How much cardio do you think we should do in a week for weight loss? Do you believe that high intensity cardio can impede muscle development?

I'm so confused about how much cardio to do each week. Sometimes I think I do too much other times I think I don't do enough. I'm also very confused about what intensity the cardio should be. I try to do kickboxing, step and hi/lo each week but I tend to do more step than anything else. My heart rate isn't consistent with my perceived exertion. Often while doing an intense step tape my heart rate will be about 90% of my target heart rate according to my heart rate monitor but I'm still able to talk (I always test how I'm doing by talking to my cat during an intense cardio workout). My perceived exertion falls about in the middle of the scale. I think I'm in relatively decent shape. I've been doing Intense Moves each week to improve my cardio capacity. I can now make it through the entire tape without stopping doing each interval at the middle range of intensity (above the basic but not the absolute hardest level). So I'm really confused about whether I should pay attention to the heart rate monitor or my perceived exertion.

I've tried to do 30 minutes of cardio after doing one of the PS upper body workouts each week. I tried doing Cathe's CTX cardio workouts but I don't have the energy after PS. I try to do an hour long cardio (kickboxing usually) on a day when I don't do any weights. And then I do a day of intervals (don't do weights that day either) each week. What do you think? So it comes out to about 3 hours a week of cardio. I guess I could do longer cardio on the weights days bringing the total cardio to 4 hours a week. But I don't have enough energy to do anything that is very intense on those days and it's really hard to find a low intensity cardio workout that doesn't bore me to tears.

BTW, I don't have a treadmill and don't have access to a gym. I could start walking but the weather's going to change soon so that won't be practical in the long run.

My original suggestion was for Donna who had experienced a plateau. It was not really a general suggestion.

But, you could do three days of cardio and three days of PS tapes and see how that works. Then you could do long cardio sessions without getting worn out from the weights. You could do step, hilo and kickboxing for your 3 cardios for crosstraining. See if you can go for an hour on cardio days, or at least 45 minutes.

See how that works.
