for best fat loss results...gym or cathe?

I'm toying with the idea of going back into the gym for the summer months....do you think I will better reach my fat loss goals this way or through Cathe?

How about both? I have a membership to my rec center so that I can cross train as much as possible. Here's what my week looked like this week.

M - Supersets (Cathe DVD) and 30 min on stairmaster at rec center
T - Step Blast
W - Premix of imax 3 step only, Cardio and Weights
R - Imax 3
F - Superset workout on gym machines and 30 min on stair mill at rec center
S - 6.2 mile run outside (use treadmill during the winter at rec center)
S - 45 min elliptical trainer at rec center, ab machines at rec center after cardio

My answer would be which one would you actually do? Are you getting tired of Cathe, and want a change? What's going to work best is what you will do most and look forward to doing most. That being said, variety keeps the body from getting too used to what you're doing and IMO it's also more fun - I like doing different things. But, while exercise is very important for cardio vascular fitness, I'm finding more and more that what's most important for fat loss is a good clean diet.

The other issue is, what's available in the gym and can you get to those classes (or are the machines generally open) or whatever? There is a really nice gym near my house that I toy with occasionally, but it is really crowded most of the time, and I know I won't go if there are too many people and/or if I can't get at what I want...

at 530am I won't have any problems with equipment....I've been in a cathe slump for about 6months now. I WANT to do Cathe but every time I get started something happens to my motivation. Then I turn to the FIRM and do that for a few days then start to feel guilty about not doing Cathe and its a viscious circle back and forth. I was thinking maybe I just need to stop home workouts all together. But then since I work fulltime I hate to take even more time away from home/kids, ya know? And I really feel that cathe will give me as good a workout as the gym anyway.....

There's really nothing wrong with doing the Firm instead of Cathe if that's what will get you motivated *stands back out of the way of the flames*. If you've been doing Cathe for six months, trying something different is a good idea. I get bored if I do the same thing over and over - which is one of the reasons I'm doing a P90X and running rotation right now. I sub Cathe usually once every other week. I know when I'm done with this rotation, I'll be dying to get back to my beloved step, but right now, I'm enjoying the change. There are various options out there in the Home Video department. Why not try something new that way, so you can keep the guilt away, and still be motivated to workout?

I've been a Cathe devotee for 6 years with very short rare deviations. I KNOW she delivers but sometimes the dread factor is high. FIRMS are "easier".....what I REALLY should do is get rid of everything else and just have cathe and the gym as my options.

Looks like you have your mind made up.

ETA - Isn't doing an "easier" workout better than nothing at all? Change is good and I don't see how you couldn't get burned out if you've done the same thing for 6 years.

Cbelle,

The means to your weight training and cardio workouts does not matter! Gym or home, machines or free weights....either or.

I think you have to understand that there is no right, wrong or easy answer...only continuous adjustments to a sound Fat Loss plan BASED ON YOUR INDIVIDUAL RESULTS week after week after week.

Christine is 100% correct. The first and most important component of a FAT LOSS (as opposed to hypertrophy or strength) plan is calorie reduction through consistent clean eating. Then the weight workout and cardio portion come into play.

Without 100%, honest clean eating day in and day out, you may be spinning your wheels trying to figure out whether you should be working out with Queen Cathe or in a gym.

Good Luck...it takes TIME and huge PATIENCE.

I've lost fifty pounds doing predominately Cathe, no gym involved. I walk half an hour before breakfast every day, do cardio DVDs two or three afternoons a week, and weightlifting DVDs two or three afternoons a week. My husband and I also have bicycles, and we take those out as schedules and weather permit. The main thing to remember is calorie intake; in spite of all the working out I was doing I didn't start dropping fat until I reduced my calories to about 1300-1400 a day. Summing up: on a diet of raw veggies, fresh fruit, lowfat and fat free dairy, and lean meat, while doing Cathe almost every day, I lost fifty pounds in eight months. Good luck!
