Food: Smoothie Recipes

Cathlete
I like to have smoothies at home in the morning. But I only have one recipe and was wondering if all you wonderful ladies could share any of your recipes?

I don't really have any "recipes"," as I just throw a bunch of stuff in my Magic Bullet blender and blend, but here are two variations that I have tried recently:
1) (All measurements are approximate!): 1 cup+ mango juice (just mango puree with apple and/or pear juice), a handful of frozen raspberries, 1 scoop protein powder (I used Vegan Complete meal replacement powder), 1 very ripe banana, 1 TBsp flax meal (or a glucosamine/flax blend I use).

2) 1 cup pomegranate juice, 1 package "Vega Complete" (this is different from Vegan complete! It's a mix developed by a Canadian Triathlete who is a vegan), a very ripe banana, a handful of frozen strawberries, soy milk, glucosamine/flax meal.

If you use a ripe banana (almost too soft to hold together, but not overripe), no extra sweetening is needed at all. If the mixture is too thick, I add some water, or I spoon it like a melty frozen dessert.

Hi Kathryn,

Would you mind telling me where to purchase vega complete? I looked for it at veganstore, veganessentials, and Yahoo but didn't see it. Also, is it any particular flavor?

Editted to say that I just found the vegan complete version. Looks good! :9 Does it have a protein powder kind of taste?

Thanks!!!

I normally have a cupful of frozen berries, strawberry, blueberry or a raspberry mix, add nonfat soymilk, either ground flaxseed or raw, whole, oats and a scoop of whey protein. If I'm craving a really sweet treat, I add some splenda or sweet-n-low.

Last night I was out of frozen berries (which substitutes for ice cubes) so I used my vanilla whey protein powder, soymilk, ice cubes & a tablespoon of natural peanut butter. It was pretty delicious.

Hi, Gina!
The "Vega complete" is in the "New Products" section at www.veganessentials.com . I got the berry flavor (yummy!), and I think there is also a chocolate?

"Vegan complete" has a bit of a strange taste that I had to get used to. Not "bad," but almost like a fakey vanilla (though all the flavorings are natural.) I don't notice it in a smoothie, just when I drink it plain in soy milk or juice. I really like that the only sweeteners in it are fructose and stevia, and they are at the very BOTTOM of the list of ingredients.

You could do what I do, and get a couple of the single serving packets to try and see what you like (there's also a "Peaceful Planet" "Supreme Meal" mix from Peaceful planet. Not as much protein, but an interesting mix of ingredients, including quinoa, millet, amaranth, flax, broccoli sprouts, etc. I haven't tried it yet.)

Oats? I've seen other people mention that they use whole oats in their smoothies. Isn't the texture either kind of gritty or mushy (depending on what the oats do). Do you use raw oats? (grains usually need some kind of processiing to digest well...sprouting would be a great way to prep whole oats).

This is mine-my DH and I have it nearly every morning.

1 cup cranberry juice (this is actually unsweetened cranberry juice diluted about 1:8 with water and a touch of lemon juice)
1 scoop protein powder (I use whey powder)
1-2 packets of splenda
2 tbls non-fat plain yogurt
1 cup mixed berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)
1 tbls flaxseed oil
ice cubes

Yummy!!:)

Mine is fairly similar to everyones:

2 cups assorted frozen fruit (cherries seem to be my fav), 3/4 cup soymilk, 1 scoop vanilla Spirutein protein powder, 1 T ground flax.

I never have used any sweetener, most likely because I have always been a salt craver!!

Thanks Kathryn for the link for the Vegan Complete, I'll definitely check it out...:)...Carole

From what I understand, the whole, rolled oats are lightly steamed then flattened. I have seen many recipes for smoothies with rolled oats and I have seen granola & muesli with raw rolled oats. I've never had any problems with it, never heard of any toxicity. I also know I feel fuller longer when I add these to my morning smoothie.

As for the taste, maybe a tiny bit gritty, but I actually like it & they grind pretty good in the blender. Similar texture to the flax seed that I still grind in the blender, (mental note: need to buy a grinder.) I don't like mushy cerial. I like the chewy texture, so this is acceptable to me.

I saw this one on Kitchen Accomplished on the FoodNetwork a few weeks ago & just tried this today.

1 Banana
1 cup Mango
2 cups of Spinach (yes, spinach)
1 cup of Cranberry juice
1 scoop Protein powder
Ice cubes

This was so delicous. Of course, I added the ice & protein to their recipe. I could not believe how tasty this was. You couldn't taste the spinach & it had some power nutrients with it.

That sounds interesting Marla. I do a salad that has spinach and strawberries, so i can imaging that this would be good too. Does the protein powder you use have a flavor?

jes:)

Sounds, um, interesting. But what color was it (green + red = grey!). Not that I should talk, because some of my smoothies (the ones with spirulina in the ingredients) are a not-too-pretty green. Though this morning, I had a beautiful, raspberry pink/red smoothie.

Here's a tasty one that I got off the beachbody website.

Pina Colada smoothie

1/2 half cup yogurt(recipe calls for plain, but I used peach yogurt)
1/2 cup light vanilla soy milk
1/2 cup pineapple chunks
1 teas. coconut extract
1 scoop vanilla protien powder
ice

It's very good.:)
