Food labels!

I got fooled by the food labeling scoundrels again! I went grocery shopping this morning and needed bread. My rule of thumb is that it has to have 3 grams of fiber per slice and no partially hydrogenated oils in it. I bought a bread that said 4 grams of fiber and the ingredient list contained no partially hydrogenated oils. When I got home, I realized that one serving of this bread is two slices, not one, so it really only has two grams of fiber per slice. UGH!

Does anybody else get frustrated by food labeling like me?? There is almost no consistency!

You have to be sooooooo careful when it comes to those devious little guys who print these labels. My pet peeve is vitamin labels that state the amounts you're getting and then you come to find out that you need to take like 2 or more pills to actually get this amount. I just encountered this with pregnancy vitamins. I purchased a high price bottle from a health food store and figured they would last a while and came to find out that you need to take 6 per day to actually get nutrients printed on the label (and they look like horse pills). So...yes I sympathize.

Most bread servings are 2 slices--what kind of bread is it that it only has 4 grams of fibre? Try a whole grain or multi-grain whole wheat bread, they should have more fibre. Although, then you have to watch out for more fat. What a pain in the neck labels are!

Hi Deb,
It is Arnold Oat Bran bread. I went to a different grocery store than ususal and this one didn't have the German dark wheat bread I usually buy, so I had to find a replacement. The serving size on the German dark wheat is one slice, so I wasn't thinking to look out for that!
Better luck next time!

Thanks for the replies.

Did you ever consider making your own bread? That way you can control what goes into in and know what you're getting. Making bread the old-fashioned way is pretty time consuming, but a bread machine makes bread baking a snap. I use mine to bake two loaves a week. Plus, it smells SO good and the taste of hot, fresh bread is wonderful.
