Flush the Fat?

Cathlete
I know this topic has been discussed before but can anyone give me more details? I eat cleanly (following the Zone pretty close), watch my sugar and flour intake and drink water. I'm just looking for what will help "flush" the top layer and help me look more defined/less bulky. Working out alternating heavy weights/cardio... Now that January is over I'm getting motivated once again.

Any advice/help would be so appreciated!

Hi Brenda....I got the best results following the Zone. I was also running for cardio and a few of Cathe's step workouts. I was lifting heavy and really did see a layer of fat disapear and more definition than I had ever had before. I was 39 at the time. I think that Slow & Heavy and Pyramid Upper and Lower are very close to how I was lifting. I am injured now so not much running. But I do try to do alot of cardio, about 45 min a day. I am trying to get back on track myself. I gained about 10 lbs!...you will find many other veiws on Lifting and Cardio, mainly just see what works for you. ...:)...Carole

I can't remember who had talked about it but someone had actually said they were doing something called "Flush the Fat" and I think there were phases involved- haven't had time to actually research it yet so I was hoping someone would know if this was a ligitimate program to follow. I would imagine it involves what we're doing now w/the Zone (very clean eating, healthy carbs, no sugar, etc).
Anyone?? I'll still check out the info you gave me- i do need to loose a layer before bathing suit season.

Thanks for the info Carole & Pinky, I knew you guys would be helpful.
Actually I found the book in the bookstore yesterday and its written by 2 women, one being Joannie Greggins (from "Morning Stretch" that I watched YEARS ago). I glanced through it and unfortunately Joannie was in a few of the excercise pictures and I was really unimpressed by how her body looked (no disrespect)- but I put the book down and said forget it. The Zone seems to be working ok so far. I also read more on the SBDiet yesterday- similar to the Zone but it starts by cutting out all carbs and gradually ads "good" carbs as it goes on. I'm not crazy about illimating fruits and vegetables in any plan.

I'm going to check out the sites now- thanks Pinky!

Also, I know we had previously taking "days off" - Barry Sears does discuss this but like you would give someone a warning about drinking. (I.e. get drunk, see how bad you feel the next day, you'll know your body doesn't like it and its not worth that feeling--- eat poorly, see how lousy you feel the next day, you'll go back to the Zone guilt free)

I know the worst thing about any alcohol, is it lowers your metabolism as you drink. So you aren't burning as many calories as you normally would. I feel absolutely awesome when I follow the Zone strictly. I have now for about 2 weeks and kinda forgot how good you could feel...:)...Carole

You are welcome Brenda, Pinky is great with websites. I got to thinking...I watched Joannie too..yes a long time ago. I remember her doing these face exercises, that got me cracking up. I remember this one...say "eeeeeeeewwwww"....then "eeeeeeeeeee" I think my neck hurt the next day. Back on track...I would so hate to cut out fruit and vegeys from my diet....good luck...:)...Carole

SBD does not cut out all carbs in the beginning. Unlike Adkins, vegtables are encouraged, but only low glycemic vegetables in the beginning. Potatoes, corn, carrots and beets are among some of the only veggies not permitted until later. I also understand yogurt is permitted now as well.

A lot of people go directly to phase 2 to avoid the fatigue that can be associated with phase 1.

I know this sounds defensive but I've tried both this and Adkins and feel SBD way of eating is very clean and healthy.

When I started eating carbs after being on Adkins, I gained weight right away. Not so with SBD.

SBD and the Zone have lots of similarities, especially when it comes to which foods are "favorable"/"unfavorable". And the induction phase of SBD requires that all starchy carbs be eliminated (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes -- Candi, correct me here if I'm wrong). The Zone has such a phase but it wasn't emphasized so well in the book. I think an induction phase was mentioned in only one paragraph that wasn't set off well enough to be noticed, especially if you were just browsing.

I personally cannot live on low glycemic fruits and vegetables alone. Especially on days when I'm lifting heavy. Gotta have my slow-cooking oatmeal, at least.:)

Candi, does SBD have a cheat day?

Pinky

You're right Pinky. All starchy stuff is out, too for the first phase. You know, I was gonna mention that from what I knew about the Zone, they were sort of similar cause Dr. Agaston (the author) says the best way to eat is to have protein/carbs/fats for each meal if possible but I don't think he talks specific ratios. The reason to eat this way, he stresses, is that it keeps your insulin levels constant which helps curb cravings.

I have managed to keep to the low glycemic stuff pretty good, but I do have my times. When I do eat something with sugar, though, I notice I'm craving sweet stuff the rest of the day, and feel hungrier too. I rely on my fruits for my sweet fix most of the time, which is okay cause I love fruit.

I lifted heavy for awhile, but I'm a pear and finding that endurance training is helping me achieve my goals better. But when I did lift heavy, I ate more. Just had too.

By the way, Pinky, after phase 1, slow cooking oatmeal is on the 'good' list. I eat that everyday for breakfast, with some protein powder added. High fiber cereal is also allowed, like Fiber One or All Bran.

Thanks for explaining Candi- it seems like the SBD and Zone do have many similarities. I know they both stress the need for choosing non-fatty proteins as opposed to Atkins which just stresses no carbs and any protein. I tried Atkins years ago and was SO tired I couldn't function.

Pinky, I hear you about the oatmeal- I now make enough to last a few mornings and have become addicted to it (along w/egg whites and cottage cheese).

I could not tolerate Atkins either. I am not much of a meat eater and with so much exercise, I was very fatigued and could not think straight. I have friends, though, that love it. Guess that goes back to 'everyone's different'. Atkins is DH diet of choice when he wants to lose a few lbs. Works real well for him.

I'm an early morning exerciser and oatmeal keeps me going and then some. I LOVE it!

Yes Pinky....exactly right. She did a whole show one time doing just facial exercises...at the time I thought it was a complete waste of time. I just seemed to remember that specific one when I thought about Morning Stretch, which was probably one of my first inroductions to exercise on TV. And her expression were always very funny..Carole...:D

Candi, thanks for giving us more info on SBD. I gotta say I didn't like oatmeal then, but somehow I've taught myself to like it. (My digestive system likes it as well.:)) I don't think I could make it through SBD's induction phase, with only low-glycemic fruits and veggies as carbs. I know I didn't do that with the Zone. I went directly to phase 2.:) But it's working well for me so far. I notice it works better when I eat EXACTLY every 3 hours, which is impossible when you're constantly busy.

Pinky
