FLOORING ????????????

Hi,

Well I have been shopping for flooring for the last month for our basement workout/playstation/craft room. I was thinking of putting in hardwood - then it went to Pawling PVC - then to RubberCall bouncee. It is all very expensive.

My question is - has anyone gove to www.greatmats.com and puchased? What did you get. There is the aerobic tiles, exercise mats, and basement mats. They are sending sample but wanted to get an idea from some of the people who have these in their rooms. Also - do you put it over the existing carpet or over the cement? We have carpet but no padding underneath. My joints are screaming at me. I am 44.

Any input would be helpful. I did a search and didn't find the answer to any of these questions.

Thanks,

Dawn

I used the "play type" mats, the foam things that interlock and made a giant workout floor area and put an area rug over it as I didn't like just the mat (felt slick to me, I need a little traction during all those lunges Cathe "forces" me to do!) and I feel like that has been helpful. I workout in my basement and it was just a carpet over top of cement, so it was a GIANT improvement!

I bought the "exercise" mats from this company and I absolutely love them! I think they are a few years old and have held up perfectly. I really have no complaints whatsoever. I don't know how they compare to the playmats people usually are talking about, I think these are a bit more durable since they were made for exercise. I, like you, was worried about my joints when I turned 40. I was having lots of neck pain which has subsided. Don't know if it's the mats or the yoga I started doing about the same time. I put mine directly over the cement floor in basement. I did notice it sometimes moved (the whole area 9X9 or 10X10) when I was doing power step moves. I just put my weight bench on the end and no more movement. You won't be disappointed.

This is Angie again-I just remembered the mats did feel sort of slippery to the "socked" foot when I bought them and it took a few weeks to get that slippery feeling away but they warn you about that when you get them.

I don't know what type of hardwood flooring you were looking at so if I suggest something you tried already, I apologize.

When I refloored our living room I used a laminate floor, looks like hardwood. If you can handle tiles you can do this job. You have to put a pad underneath it and the pieces lock into one another, no glue or nails.

It is sometimes referred to as a "floating floor"

I purchased 2 feet by 2 feet subflooring squares at Lowe's for my basement workout area. They have strips on the bottom that gets the wooden part off the cement. You use a rubber mallot to snap them together. I put my Home Depot squares on top of the subfloor since I already had them.
