flooring for garage workouts

Hi Cathe (or anyone else who can help),

I need advice on what to do with my garage floor if I'm going to be working out there. My husband and I recently moved and I'm going to have to relocate my workout area to our garage to free up space in the new house for other stuff. I'm worried that this may be hard on my knees and other joints because it's concrete flooring. Is there any special floor treatments or matting that I could use to help with this?

Thanks so much

Carla

I work out in my basement at home and use antifatigue mats - 2 layers of it - over a carpet (and then over cement). I know that Sam's Club sells the anti fatigue mats for a good price. You may also be able to get it from Home Depot (a bit more pricey) or Walmart (not sure if they sell it).

Hope this helps a bit. Yes the garage floor will be hard on your knees and joints.

Carla,

I work out on an indoor/outdoor carpet-covered cement floor between our garage and house. When it started bothering me to exercise on this hard surface, I purchased some of those rubber flooring sections that look like puzzle pieces at K-mart. They interlock and to make them more secure, I fastened them to the carpeting with industrial strength Velcro. THEY DON'T MOVE!! My workouts are much more comfortable now. Good luck!!

Hi Carla,

Funny you should ask.

My DH recently came back from deployment for a few weeks. He noticed the picture of the road trip on Cathe's home page. He looked over at me and said, "What is this about a road trip?" I proceeded to give him the 411. I must admit that I was confused at why he asked. He then said, "Why didn't Cathe annouce this!" (like he knows Cathe) Again, I was confused. I replied, she did. It just wasn't the right time for me. He then left the house and returned with 12 eight packs of puzzle mats from Sam's club for my workout room. He actually felt bad that I didn't attend the road trip.

I now have a wall to wall foam floor. I already had 28 Prospirit mats. So, my floor is dual layer foam matting to include 30 square feet of closet. There is an 11 x 8 foot cardio deck, which is covered in black Prosirit mats for my stationary cardio equipment and heavy weight bench. The exercise area is an 11 x 10 blue mat with a few green agility grid squares. I was a little nervous about this at first but I love it.

The Prospirit mats were a bit slippery but the Sam's club mats are not. They are firm enough to provide lateral support and give just enough to absorbed impact. Sam's club mats were so much cheaper than the Prospirit mats. I have tried various types of cardio workouts and I am completely satisfied with this floor. They work well for stretching and other exercises where I lie down on the floor. I probably didn't need two layers, but you would probably need two layers over concrete. Did I mention that I love this floor! I looked into different flooring options but I am glad that I have this floor. It ended up being about half the cost of some other puzzle mats and 1/5 the cost of other flooring options. Cathe does has some info about flooring on her home page.

Goodluck,
jordan

PS: Francine if you happen to read this, yes I gave the proper spank you.

Hi Carla -

I have the same setup as mentioned above as well. I have indoor/outdoor carpet that I got fairly cheap from Home Depot - then two layers of the puzzle matting from Costco/Sams - they were around $9 a pack. Think I used 3 or 4 packs to double cover my area. It works pretty well... I do need to get some double stick tape to keep them from sliding - it doesnt slide much at all - but enough that it would help to tape it all together.

I have overuse injuries in my knees from all my years of basketball and this works pretty well for me.
