Flesh eating disease?

My MD gave me a cortisone shot to the inside tendon of my left ankle last August. It was inflamed from the miles I was running while traing for a Marathon that I ran last October 1st. Sometime around the end of October I noticed a weird indentation in my ankle as if there was fat and/or muscle missing. It is not painful so I didn't address it with my MD. Well, yesterday I noticed that a couple of other areas that like my ankle are up furhter on the inside of my shin/calf. As soon as the doctor's office is open I'll be making an appointment but I'm wondering if any of you have any clues at all as to what my problem is. It's sort of freaking me out!

I've never had that disease but from what I've read, they're purplish-reddish in color, the spot is very swollen and sometimes there's a hole in your skin. I think it's supposed to be very painful. I could be wrong but there are some nurses on here. Yo Michelle!!

Hope it's nothing serious though! Let us know what happens.

Well, I worked in surgery as an RN for several years and saw a few cases of the "flesh eating bacteria." In every instance that I saw it spread very quickly, like hours. One man died within a week of diagnosis. So I doubt very much that is what you have. I'm not sure what it is you're describing, but it's always good to get it checked out. HTH. Good luck.

Spider bites?

A friend managed to get bit by a brown recluse on his shoulder and his symptoms sound similar.

I guess flesh eating disease was not the correct way to describe it!

I just got back from the MD and she said that the cortisone shot she gave me a few months ago caused the fat to atrophy and that my case is only the second time in 16 years that she's seen this reaction. I'm getting an MRI next week just to make sure but she seemed confident that is what the problem is. She also told me never to get cortisone shots again. I asked her if I could have one in each butt cheek but she said no.:(

Jumping in on this late, I know. I'm an RN and have been working in a wound healing center for 6 months now and have seen both. Flesh eating bacteria (necrotizing fasciitis) moves pretty quickly, and is usually caused by an unclean cut/wound (and sorry to say... many times from body piercing, especially belly button).

BTW, I do have a patient now with a brown recluse spider bite. It is not necrotizing fasciitis, but rather the spider bite itself causing the wound. The little bite ended up in a huge wound on her leg. Brown recluse supposedly live in sand alot, this particular patient got her bite from a spider while she was playing in a sandbox with her grandson.

Hey Elaine, That is too weird! Are the indentations permanent? Are they going to continue to "spead" up your shin? Do you want me to take out your MD? You do mine and I'll do yours!!!}(

Sounds like a good deal to me, Sarah! My MD was on my sh&% list anyway because when I went in for the coritsone shot she told me she didn't approve of running marathons! I was sure she was just trying to sabotage me!!

Have you had a pedicure lately? I know a couple of women who got infections from the foot soaks. Hopefully your doctor will be able to figure it out and get you on the road to recovery.
