flaxseed

Based on what I've read from others on this forum, I have been buying the whole seeds and keeping them in the freezer. I grind about a weeks worth at a time using my coffee bean grinder and keep that portion in the refrigerator for sprinkling on salads and yogurt. I don't really know how long it will keep in each of these states but I've never had any go bad on me and I've kept them both for several weeks that way. I have to add that I absolutely love the benefits of flax seed - I make sure I get in at least 4 tablespoons (usually more) per day! HTH.

I also keep the whole seeds in the freezer for quite a few weeks. I grind what I need in my magic bullet and keep that in the freezer as well. I use about 1T in my AM oatmeal. If I have too much more thatn that, it can be embarassing! Phyllis

Thanks for your replies. I was going to start putting in my a.m. oatmeal also. What is it like if you have it "whole" in food? Any difference?

My understanding is that you really need to grind it. If you eat it whole, it just passes through you. I eat it in my steel cut oats in the a.m. also - it adds a nice flavor ~ added benefit!

Hmmm...I've been eating Nature's Path cereal with Pumpkin seed and flaxseeds. I'm assuming the flax seeds are the little brown things that look like mouse droppings? They look whole, not ground. So am I getting any benefit from them? And I don't keep my cereal in the fridge but I go through it in 5 days.

I've never heard them described that way, but yes, that's them!

They look like sesame seeds.

They are whole in many cereals, so be sure to chew well (otherwise, they just come out the way they went in).

I have some crackers that use whole flax. I make sure to really crunch down on the seeds so they break up.

I went ahead and bought half a pound. I have already put them in the freezer. Tomorrow I go to the produce market and buy
tons of fruit and veggies.:9 They sell a nut grinder there for 8.99. I will just grind them up and start w/ 1 T. in my oatmeal in the morning.
