Fitness/nutrition conundrums

We hear so much conflicting information (and of course, the devil is in the details, so something that seems like the information is conflicting might just be a matter of being specific. It also helps to consider the source of the info). I thought it might be fun to post some examples- here's a few to get us started:

  • steady state cardio is the way to go/HIIT cardio is the way to go (in fact, both should be used)
  • heavy lifting low reps is best/light weights lots of reps is best (bodies respond best to lots of change, so using both is great- and mixing it up even more is better)
  • eggs are bad for you/eggs are good for you (eggs are mostly good for you, but too much of anything can be overkill)
  • soy is good for you/soy will give you breast cancer
  • eat lots of lean protein/too much protein will kill you
  • low carb diets will lean you out/low carb diets will give you a heart attack (well, kinda depends what you do with the rest of your nutrients- if you are eating low carb and high trans fats, you might be the skinniest corpse in the cemetary!)

Does anyone else have some to add?

Coffee is fine and protective against some diseases/coffee is addictive and harmful

Wine is good and protective against some diseases /wine is addictive and harmful

Chocolate is good/chocolate is bad

You must be super skinny to live long and be healthy/it's ok to be slightly overweight in fact the longest-lived people are slightly overweight

Fasting is a wonderful rest for the body in which toxins are eliminated, skin clears, the digestive system gets a rest/Fasting is horrible it deprives your body of needed nutrients and encourages fat storage when you do eat again and slows your metabolism

Vegan/Lots of meat is the best way to go

Here are a few that I have heard recently:

To get a dancer's/swimmer's/runner's body, you must exercise like a dancer/swimmer/runner. Conversely body composition is all genetic, dancing/swimming/running won't change your genetic shape.

You can't lengthen muscle, you can only stretch muscle. Conversely - You must always stretch to lengthen muscle.

Here are a couple more:

Milk/dairy is good for you -helps strengthen bones vs. Milk/dairy is bad for you - promotes allergies, etc.

Coconut oil is a bad saturated fat and should be avoided vs. Coconut oil is a beneficial fat

Hormone replacement therapy is good for your heart and bones vs. Hormone replacement therapy will give you cancer, etc.

Colon-cleansing/detoxing is good - helps get toxins out of body vs. Colon-cleansing/detoxing is unnecessary as your body can eliminate toxins itself

So much info out there... so confusing...:(

I can't think of anything to add because y'all have been very thorough! Wow! No wonder losing weight and healthy living is so confusing!
