Fitness Meetup Group--in need of creative ideas

Beavs

Cathlete
I have spoken with my local like minded fitness geeks, some of them Cathe-ites and have decided to start a local fitness meet up group.

I got the idea from Meetup.com when I was looking for a local area German language group to practice my horrible German language skills.

I would like to start a local fitness group with (perhaps) monthly meetings on a variety of topics to appeal to a wide range of people at all levels of fitness. Some of the ideas kicked around are:

Activities:
meeting at a facility and taking a class together
hiking, biking, or paddling
clean eating potluck lunches/dinners

Topics:
speakers to discuss a variety of topics such as injuries, goal setting,
starting a fitness program, getting back into shape after baby, etc etc

Of course these all depend on the level of interest and who we can get to speak to us for free. So....I'd love to hear any creative ideas you all might have and if you are involved in any such groups and whether or not you were successful. Thank you in advance!

I'd do a bootcamp type workout for about 90 minutes. }( }( }(

ETA: Call around to local gyms and speak to the program head or the gym manager to ask for peeps who might speak for free.

I attend a fitness boot camp and along with the sessions that we attend, they also provide 2 sessions (as a group meeting)with a dietitian. In the past they have also set up meetings at a local fitness shoe store. The owners would talk about the shoes and give anyone who buys shoes that day a discount. I'm sure you could approach health food stores, vitamin shops, etc. with this type of thing. Even if they are doing it for free, they could get new business out of it. I would target local businesses first as they would have the most to gain, rather than the larger chain business.

Hope this helps!

C'mon peeps! Where are those creative brains?? (except for the two above---thanks ladies and yes Amy, I would love to go to your bootcamp class!)

Oh, Beavs, I'm so jealous of your group. Will you be praticing your horrible fitness skills, like your horrible German skills? Why not ask members to each take a meeting to demo or share their favorite form of fitness ie, running, stepping, kickboxing.

I bet you could contact a local gym, Y and fitness store for additional ideas or even freebies.

Sorry Beavs. I, too, am jealous of your fitness group. Around here people don't exercise, that is why I turned to Cathe.:) The only idea I have is to share healthy recipes at each meeting and maybe collect all of them quarterly and make a cookbook? I am always interested in new recipes. Also, you could start a free blog. Sorry my brain is not fully functional this early in the am. :) HTH

Actually, I hadn't thought of that. A cookbook could be fun. I also like the idea of freebies ;-)
Don't get too jealous though. I don't know if my idea will fly or not...it might just be me and two other Cathe-ites and we'll just end up hitting the wine :9 :9 :9
