Has anybody seen the show "Fit to Live"? I caught it Sun on Discovery or Discovery Health. Nifty little show. I assume there is more than one episode, but in this one they took 6 "average Americans" (every where from fat to skinny, smoker to non smoker) yet all were unfit. The premise was they had to save themselves from a burning high rise building. They had 10 mins to exit the building. Up/down stairs, dragging dummies to represent other people, and over/under obstacles. None made it, so they all "died". Then 4 weeks of heavy lifestyle changes, more exercise, cutting out the smokes and soda pop, watch what they were eating. They redid the whole thing in 4 weeks and they all "lived" The biggest guy who almost keeled over the 1st time, cut his time in half to nine minutes something, lost like 20 lbs and "lived" It seemed it really opened up all the participants eyes and made them think.
We need to be fit to function in everyday life, or in emergencies. Fitness isn't necessarily the the size of our jeans, but how we take overall care of our body. The ex-military girl was thin, but so out of shape - she "died" the 1st time too. She said she was pretty much trying to be thin and pretty instead of strong and healthy. Pretty comes from the inside, healthy and strong comes from work and care. But they clearly showed that improvement is not that far away. What a neat-o show.
This is the stuff they should be showing instead of diet pill commercials and celebrities who are so thin they'll blow over in the breeze.
Nan
As a side note, why do the the magazines at the grocery store always have a "lose 10lbs in 15 mins" diet on the cover, then on the inside a recipe for 5000 calorie a slice chocolate cake??? Inquiring minds want to know.
