Fit Moms Check-in

Cathlete
Hi Fit Moms. It appears I missed last weeks posts. Oops! Life is so busy, isn't it?

Has everyone gotten their Hardcores? I've done all the cardio ones. I plan on trying the strength ones soon. I usually do them only once or twice & then they collect dust. Maybe this time it'll be different. I'm just a cardio junkie ;) it has nothing to do with Cathe.

So far, Imax,Low Max & Core Max are my favorites. I really should do Imax 3 on just 6-inch plateform b/c i truley believe this is her hardes cardio video yet. It just about kills me!!!!

DH has been diagnosed with shingles. He has them around his right eye. He's extremely angry & mean. Please keep us in our prayers b/c our marriage isn't doing too well with all the angry & mean words that are being said. It's hard for me to be compassionate. We need prayer!!! Tuesday was our 13year anniversary...so we've been through tough times. I'm confident we'll make it through this too. :)

Sun: Imax 3
Mon: off
Tues: KickMax + core max
Wed: Stretch Max + Imax 3
Thurs: High Step Challenge + core max
Fri: Imax 3
Sat: off --spent most of the afternoon in ER with DH
Sun (today): Hard core extreme workout #1 (intervals) ** really liked this one!

Okay, YOUR next! Let's heare about your week, since I spilled mine out!!!!

Hi melanie,
Sorry to hear your dh has shingles. As hard as it is, try to tune hubby out. He is probably getting bored and frustrated that he can't go to work and sick of being sick. Marriage is hard!

I spent last week doing my hardcores. My favorite is imax3 followed by high step. We got back last night from NY. We were planning on staying through today but it is snowing today so we left yesterday. My mother had a hysterectomy last week which is why we went to visit her. She is doing well. Now to remember my workout week:

Sun-musclemax
Mon-kickmax
Tue-gym stle-back +imax 3 blast premix
Wed-gym style-shoulders,triceps+seg. 2 coremax
Thurs-Hardcore extreme-high impact circuits+leg drills
Fri-off-travel day
Sat-Tae bo-live vol. 4 +about half of tae bo cardio circuit 2

Hi there--

Melani, I'm sorry about your husband's shingles also. I hear that that condition is really painful. I will pray for your marraige.

Shopaholic--glad to hear that your mother is recovering well.

I am loving my Hardcores. I am extremely sore from the GS chest/triceps workout. I was not nearly as sore after the BAck/shoulders/biceps workout. I think those 72 pushups nearly did me in, but I was pleasantly surprised at how many of them I did "boy" style:7.

My favorite workout is Low Max, followed by IMAX 3, but I am enjoying all of them, except I just can't get to excited about stretching. Just me, I guess.

My workout week
Feb 18th-GS BSB+core 1
Feb 19-GS legs standing+KM Bootcamp challenge premix
Feb 20-Low Max
Feb 21-GS CT+core 1
Feb 22-KM leg drills+GS legs floor work
Feb 23 (tomorrow)-IMAX 3
Feb 24-rest:)

I finally lost some weight--2 lbs, which is a lot for me in one week, but it was nice to see the scale go down after so long. I am really trying to watch what I eat, but today I did not eat to lose:9 .

I also got my period back, probably because I started weaning Mr. B about a month ago. I was totally not expecting it at all, so it was a little wierd to get it.

take care everyone!
Maggie

Boy what a busy week. Hi all you fitmoms!!

Melanie...I took a peek here at the beginning of the week and was about to post when my computer shut off...so I didn't get back to you until now. BUT..my point is...I've been prayin for you all week and hope dh is going to feel better soon and that you can have incredible patience with him. Men are NOT good at being sick...AT all....ever....never. Many, many, many prayers sent your way.

Sun. HE #3, P90X Chest and Triceps with heavy chest emphasis
Mon. P90X shoulders and arms, Coremax #2, HE #2
Tues. S&H legs, 2 mile walk (not by choice...the truck wouldn't start), Tae Kwon Do at night - lots of ab work!!
Wed. P90X chest and back, Stretch.
Thur; Coremax #1, Lowmax, heavy shoulders, pull up sets, stretch
Fri. Muscle max and stretch
Sat. HE #2 S&H legs, Heavy shoulders

I really like the HE #2 & 3, except I don't like LM warmup so I sub in Imax III warmup in place of #2's LM warmup. I LOVE the KM leg stuff at the end. I've been doing some long workouts this week to blast that last bit of fat from my tush. It's been kind of fun...except that I've been lo carbing at the same time and I got a little crabby for a few of the days, briefly. I went just a tad too lo carb.

Maggie....sounds like your all set for possibly another baby???

Interesting....I am continuing to lose inches (tush,legs)...but no scale change.

Noah and Hannah have had colds the past week, but are doing better. They are so cute together. The rest of our kids are spaced apart, but they are closer in age and they play like two little bear cubs. Too cute.

Briee

Briee--your workouts look amazing! You must be working out close to two hours a day. No wonder you are losing inches.

Yes, I'm ovulating now, so we'll see what happens baby wise.;-). Pregnancy is spiritually and emotionally such a hard time for me, not to mention all the weight gain that I'm kind of worried about it, but I do want more children at the same time, so that's why I like to let the Lord decide these things for me. I truly believe that He knows best what I can handle and what I can't.

My kiddos are sick as well, after a fairly healthy winter:-( .

take care
Maggie

Melanie, I am so sorry about your husband and how it is affecting your relationship. My husband's college thesis advisor has shingles in his eye area and it has been a thorn in his side (I believe once you have the virus it is always in your body whether active or inactive). I think it is a similar virus to herpes and cold sores and all that. I have read something about hydrogen peroxide therapy as a possibility for treatment. Anyway, I will pray for you both.

I love Low Max. I tried Imax 3, but couldn't even get through the warmup. I still like to get my heart rate up, but I can't handle the impact. With my incontinence and pain for previous episiotomy, my popo area is sensitive to impact. Anyway, it will be a brand new workout to me post partum. Well, maybe way beyond post partum, like by several months!

Mon- Low Max
Tue- none
Wed- Muscle Max
Thu- Kick Max
Fri- HSC
Sat- Energy Sprint

Well, I am getting big. I can't fit into most of my skirts, and the tighter jeans are barely zip-up-able. I have gained at least 10-15 pounds, but I don't want to find out exactly how much. I kind of agree with Maggie about pregnancy being rough. I do not like being pregnant. I want to have 4 kids, but I am scared to think of being pregnant 2 more times! I am so tired and sick and cranky. The big revelation will be how my popo feels after this coming childbirth. Like I said, my episiotomy site still hurts. My midwife (different than the one who delivered Max) suspects that it may not have been sewn up properly last time. She says it may almost be beneficial if it tears, so it can be properly sewn up this time. If I could change one thing about last time, I would have said no to the episiotomy! Anyway, that said, I am so excited for the arrival of our new baby. I hope Max doesn't freak out to much. He gets so much special attention from Mom now, it will be hard, especially with breastfeeding. I was sitting on the couch for hours a day in Max's first months. How will I handle it? Any input from you guys is welcomed. I am considering doing less breastfeeding with this one.

Maggie and Briee, wow those workout weeks look great!
melanie, keep using us a support.
Emy, have you tried imax 3 premix with step oonly , no impact? I am sorry you are still having problems from the faulty episiotomy with max. If I have a second, my plan is to pump more and start bottle feeding earlier so I can get some help. If you are nursing though, have Max right near you and engage him in songs or other funny talks while you nurse. I know he isn't talking much yet, but by the time the baby comes he probably will be talking more, besides, he should love songs no matter what. I would also keep reminding him that he is special because he is the big brother. Also, you may want to get some special toys that you only take out for Max when you are nursing.
My niece and nephew are 2 years apart(almost to the day) and suprisingly my niece(the older one) , handled it better than I thought.

Hi ladies! Things are better & I'm positive it has to do with all the prayers and support we've had. Everyone is so awesome. Some ladies at the church watched Justin & Jory for me, while we went back & forth from hospital(about 45minutes from home). I took Friday off of work to be with DH, who despirately needed some emotional TLC from me. DH is no longer angry or mean, he's doing much better both physically & mentally.

DH is slowly recovering. He's actually able to watch Justin today for the first time since the outbreak. We're hopeful that he won't lose his vision in his right eye too. ;)

BTW, I might as well post my workouts now, as they aren't too impressive. ;)

Sun: hardcore extreme #1 + core max #2
Wed: Kick Max Bootcamp premix (loved this version!!!)
Fri: hardcore extreme #2 + core max #1 (a new fav!!!)

That's it!!!! Thanks again! You guys are all doing awesome!

Emy so glad you are still checking in!!! I'm amazed at all you are doing WHILE PREGNANT!! I will admit...my favorite, favorite, favorite interval of IMAX III is the jacks on and off the step (side ways), BUT when I do the last part of the jacks it never fails....have to pee. I can usually make it through and then many times I run to the bathroom and resume the work out as quick as possible!!

Regarding episiotomies. I had one with my first baby and it hurt for almost 2 years. "Marital relations" were VERY painful. I read a lot about episiotomies and how they can be VERY painful so when I went to deliver baby #2 I told the doctor (word for word) if you give me an episiotomy.....I will give you one!!!! HE DIDN'T. AND....I tore EVERYWHERE. Outside, inside all up the birth canal...it took him an hour to sew me up. BUT (and here's the cool part) I was MUCH less sore and had no problems with intercourse 5 weeks after deliver and thereafter. NO PROBLEMS!! I think nature kind of knows where to tear if need be. With the next four babies I didn't tear at all...we learned quite a bit more about natural delivery and being in water really helped. Ever think of a water birth?....oh they are sooooo much better. There are lots of cool videos out regarding water birth and many hospitals have tubs now. FINALLY.

Briee

Labor? Just give me drugs...of course that doesn't work out either when your doctors decide YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do I still sound bitter over that? ;) ;) :D :D

Melanie...I'm so glad to hear the positive report about dh...we will keep praying.

You're too funny regarding labor. I only wanted drugs the first time around and the doctor was lucky he wasn't in kicking distance when he read my chart that he quoted to me "she wants to have a natural birth - no drugs".....I could have sequential kicked him right out of the state of Pennsylvania. He never did give me any and I dilated in 50 minutes which were the longest 50 minutes of my life!!!

My first birth plan was very detailed. Every detail was covered. It was a page and a half long.

Five children has shortened it considerably:p

1. Epidural, yes (been there and done that with natural childbirth)

2. Absolutely NO EPISIOTOMY--(the thought of being sliced in that part of my body has always horrified me--I'd rather tear)

3. Absolutely no personal, invasive questions regarding birth control.

Emy--I've never had jealousy problems with any of our kids. I was really surprised, because everyone and their dog expects it to happen, but it didn't. Instead, we had toddlers who "loved too much":) :* and children arguing about who's turn it was to hold the baby. I think that Max will do fine, especially because you have spent so much time nurturing your relationship with him. He'll probably love his new baby.

take care

Hi ladies!!! I've been dealing with my shoulder and not working out at all... not even cardio. :( I hope I get back to it soon.

Emy, you are awesome!!!!!!! I hate to hear about your bad experiece with an episiotomy. I am the opposite of everyone... as usual. I had an episiotomy with Sydney... healed without problems. I tore with Jordan... I was miserable for weeks... I felt swollen and tender. I really wish I would have had a doctor that would have done perineal massage with my first... I don't think I would have tore or needed an episiotomy. It is such a disadvantage to live in my rural area.

About the new arrival... Emy you sound very attentive and nurturing ... you will find a balance... and children are so resilient and willing to love. At first, Sydney wasn't too excited about the baby. We worked with the idea each day and soon she was telling me it was time to go to the hospital. :) I"ve learned to play and take care of Jordan... mothers ROCK with multitasking!!!!!!

Maggie, it is funny you bring up the birth control issue. I am preparing my lecture for the nursing students... they are in Maternity nursing... and I think this is an area OB nurses fail miserably in because they don't ask (and I think they should be invasive) and educate. Now you have me wondering. Did you have a bad experience? My biggest pet peeve is that nurses are in the perfect position to provide education regarding Lactational Amenorrhea Method or Continuous Breasfeeding... I don't find doctors valuable sources on the method. In fact, you have to know how to find the information... not as readily available as info on the pill, condoms, etc. I cringe when I hear one say that breastfeeding is not contraceptive. UGGGGGH!!!!!!! I would like to see this change.

I hope to have a workout log again........ someday. ;)

Hi Autumn,

I hope this doesn't sound terse, it isn't meant to be.

Regarding the birth control questions, I suppose that most women don't mind being asked, but my husband and I do not use a conventional form of birth control and end up sounding like loonies (or at least all the maternity nurses I've dealt with act that way).

Our form of birth control is (i've recently learned) called Ecological Breastfeeding and it has worked very well for us in terms of spacing our children apart.

Also, are there really people who are totally unaware of birth control in this day and age? Perhaps hospitals could ask on a form if people want to discuss birth control with someone or not, instead of just doing it as a matter of course, which has been the policy of every hospital I've delivered at.

Also, natural forms of birth control are never discussed (as you mentioned) and are treated as sort of uneffective or silly. Perhaps if these were treated with respect, I might feel differently about discussing my options with a nurse or doctor.

I hope your shoulder feels better soon.

take care,
Maggie:7

Oh my...now this is a subject.

I can't seem to find the right words to respond to this and I've zapped what I've written about 4 times over. Maggie I understand exactly where you are coming from which is one of the many reasons we deliver our babies at home....alone. We have seen incredible miracles in our home deliveries which we could never have experienced in a hospital. We form our decisions of contraception as Biblically as possible, but I have yet to find many doctors or nurses who will discuss this from a Biblical perspective.

Now Autumn...I want to throw words of praise your way if you are attempting to teach birth control methods that are natural in addition to the medical norm of pill/contraction etc. Also, you are in a position where you can be extremely sensitive to the patients needs if you find out where they are coming from and then counsel from there.

Let me throw out an example here. We used to live in the state of Illinois. They are extremely conservative and invasive in their medical practices. I remember being scared to take the children to the doctor because our 2 year old was nursing (there have been cases of child welfare removing children from homes when they are nursing that long). There are also many families who have chosen not to vaccinate. If you take a child into the doctor's office in Illinois and tell them you do not vaccinate...you stand a VERY high chance of being reported to DCFS (as if this is child abuse) as well as receiving a stiff lecture regarding the dangers of not vaccinating. After you have a baby you are many times taken through an almost interrogation type of discussion regarding contraception - extremely offensive if you plan to use natural methods or just try telling them that Biblically you feel you need to trust God to plan your family - that one goes over extremely well x( x( .

Now lets discuss the state of Wisconsin. They are an extremely liberal state. I've learned to LOVE liberal. When you take a child to the doctor they ask if you vaccinate and you can safely tell them that you have reasons that you do not want to do so. You get NO opposition or lecture. On the other hand if you don't have information regarding vaccinations and wish to receive it and discuss it with someone...they are more than happy to hand you information and have a full discussion with you. From the families that have delivered here in our local hospitals...they have received wonderful encouragement from the hospital nurses and staff. They first ask what your belief's are and find our where you are coming from...they then counsel from there. Are you wishing to practice natural family planning...well let's talk about that....... Are you aware of standard contraception via pills, condoms etc... they will educate you in this area. They are extremely sensitive to what the patient's beliefs are and they proceed from there.

I would love to see more medical offices that take this position, instead of assuming that ALL patients need to follow "their" convictions or methods. I don't care whether they are Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, etc. I'm sure I've already said way too much here and I'm not a good communicator to begin with...but I think you get the basics.

Hopefully I haven't offended too many fitmoms, I enjoy posting here because I feel like I'm speaking to my fitmom group and not the open forum in general.

Briee

Also hoping that you are feeling better Autumn....I miss your posts. Workouts will always be there waiting for you!!! Cathe is so patient.....except "within" the workout....she's a slave driver there.

When I typed my post last night, I had addressed the nurses and their attitudes but thought I may sound looney so deleted it. ;) I know EXACTLY what you are talking about and medical professionals are almost all guilty of treating natural methods this way. I have picked up on this attitude especially when a woman already had 2 children.

There isn't much information on LAM and even less on Ecological Breastfeeding. Wouldn't you think that the contraceptive benefits would be included in patient education... especially breastfeeding moms?????? I doubt there are many Lactation Consultants knowledgeable about this subject... unless of course they are familiar with natural methods. I have actually heard OB nurses state that breastfeeding as contraception is a myth!!!!! This is ONE of my new pet peeves in OB nursing.

As for your impression that natural forms of birth control are treated as ineffective and silly... you are right on the money. At least it has been my overwhelming experience. All you have to do is read Planned Parenthood's info on the subject… the information is from “experts” in the field of family planning. I was given minimal information on NFP in NP school, which was considered one of (if not) the best Women's Health NP program in the country. My typed lecture notes are 2 PAGES! I'm not joking. The NP program at University of Missouri at least required "Signs of fertility the Personal Science of Natural Birth Control" by Margaret Nofziger. Thankfully, I was familiar with the Couple to Couple League and decided to better educate myself. I also did some research and discovered Taking Charge of Your Fertility. One NP I used to work with actually used to joke.... "you know what we call couple that use NFP.... parents". Well, I guess so if all you give a couple is the information we were given in school. :)

I had to visit the ER the Friday after Thanksgiving (04) with a UTI. Anyway, the triage nurse asked when my last period was… I told her 10-13-03… she had a very strange look on her face… so I added a blurb about Lactational Amenorrhea… I could tell that didn’t clear anything up for her so I explained it. Well, the nurse who actually took care of me in the ER asked me again about my LMP. I told him 10-13-03… Lactational Amenorrhea… I explained it to him too. I am sure if I would have said “I am on Depo” they would have understood without an explanation. My DH was flabbergasted (spelling?????) that I had to explain it to the nurses... he is well versed in contraception. Poor guy even knows the treatments for many women's health diagnoses. :)

Anyway, it is something I will address in my lecture. Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

My shoulder feels perfect today… I go to the chiropractor tomorrow and may workout after that if the visit goes will.

Briee,

THANK you for sharing your experiences!!!!! It upsets me that this happens!!! It really does! And I am so sad that people who base decisions from a Biblical perspective are treated with such disrespect.

One of my goals in contraceptive counseling is to provide ALL OPTIONS counseling so that a woman truly makes an informed decision... this isn't being done.

<child welfare removing children from homes when they are nursing that long>

I am outraged!!!!!!!!

<I would love to see more medical offices that take this position, instead of assuming that ALL patients need to follow "their" convictions or methods. I don't care whether they are Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, etc. I'm sure I've already said way too much here and I'm not a good communicator to begin with...but I think you get the basics.>

Me too! It is soooo important to provide all the facts... for exmaple, hormonal methods can hamper implantation is an important fact for some women.

It is nice to be missed. :) Thanks! I'll get back into it... I know Cathe is waiting for me.

Autumn...we are blessed to have you as a fitmom and friend. Thanks so much for your response and genuine compassion that you obviously show all your students and staff. God's gonna use you girl. I used to get a kick out of telling the doctor my LMP. My period didn't return for 33 months (add that to 9 months of pregnancy) which is how long baby number 4 nursed. Funny thing is when I moved to Wisconsin from Chicago I had nurses ask...oh is that all the longer you nursed...we have kids nursed until the age of 4-5 around here. I love Wisconsin.

Briee

Wow! I was fired up last night! LOL! Sorry for the grammar errors. ;) You are too funny setting your doc up like that! ;) I like it. }(

Thanks again for the kind words and the vote of confidence! I sincerely strive to provide the best, nonjudgemental care for women... it is one of my purposes in life.

Autumn

Autumn--You go, girl!! I think your approach is fantastic and we need more like you in the medical field. Honestly--you are a real encouragement.

For the stretch between babies #1 and #4, I had only 1 period! I could not breastfeed our downs baby, but I did pump my breast milk for 9 months. I had 7 months of periods before I concieved Bardric.
I have just started periods again, so we'll see what happens:p :7 :7.

Briee, it's funny you brought up liberal and conservative states and their approaches to breast feeding, vaccinations, ets. Oregon is an extremely liberal state, but very invasive, I think. Not as bad as Illinois, perhaps, but close. (But for now, we have really good homeschool law, although it's under attack this legislative session--grrrr! Can't we just ever relax?!)

take care!
Maggie

I have enjoyed this lively discussion:)
