First TImers: Curing Road Trip Nerves :-)

TarHeelMom

Cathlete
Hey everybody!

Deb, Lorrayne and I have been reading a lot of posts from Forumites who are new to the RT experience and are feeling a little shy and unsure about traveling alone to the RT and not knowing anyone. We wanted to chime in to offer you all some reassurance, because the LAST thing we want is for Road Trip Nerves to cause any of you to hesitate about trying to register.

In our experience having done this now in 2005 and 2007, what you're feeling is very common to new RT'ers. It seems to us that it's very natural to feel a bit shy and nervous when you're venturing off alone to navigate thru an airport you don't know, to a shuttle service you don't know, to a hotel you've never seen, and to spend hours on end with people you've never met and to meet and workout with your favorite instructor. And if you've booked a roommate sight-unseen, add THAT to the YIKES pile! :)

We ourselves certainly felt a lot of those same things in 2005, our first RT together. We had been "talking" via e-mail for months as we worked together as Coordinators, but we'd never met in person, and Debbie and I had never met Cathe. And, of course, we were nervous about how the weekend -- our "baby" -- would turn out. ;-)

I am not exaggerating at all, y'all, when I say that from the very first moment you lay eyes on another Cathe Road Tripper, all those negative feelings will evaporate. That was the experience we three had, on first meeting each other and then later meeting the 2005 RT'ers. Total exhilaration and downright giddiness replaced all those little creeping doubts, and we felt that way the whole weekend. Meeting Cathe will reassure you, too. She just couldn't be a nicer person, and she knocks herself out all weekend making sure we're all comfortable and cared-for. She is the hostess with the mostest!

One more little traveling tip that might help you all --

Debbie and Lorrayne and I all bought Cathe baby doll T-shirts before the 2005 RT (those original black ones), and we wore them when we flew to Philly. That made it very easy for us to spot each other at the place where we'd planned to meet in the airport. If you wear Cathe gear for your flight into Philadelphia, I guarantee you that when you make your way to the Ground Transportation area for the Rapid Rover shuttle service, you will spot all the other recently-arrived Cathe-ites immediately!

And Jerry, I'm betting the Cathe shirts aren't quite rignt for ya -- you and all the guy RT'ers should buy yourself a Cathe baseball cap! ;-)

I hope this helps and that we'll see ALL of you hitting "SEND" on the registration days coming up!!!!

Thank you so much for this post although I do feel a little nervous about going there alone I assure you it is not enough to make me not try to register. I wanted to go last year but I wasnt home to register and missed out on the opprotunity. I am going to try my best to attend one of this years road trip I really hope I get a spot so I can meet all you fabulous lady's!

Thanks for posting this, Kathy! I have been on the fence about registering for many of the reasons that you mentioned. I may just have to give it a shot and see what happens!:7

Kathy S,

I may just have to by a shirt to prove you wrong!! Does Cathe sell shoehorns so I can sqqqquuuuueeeeeezzzzzeeee into it???

Regarding a Cathe cap, I have a fairly big melon, so we'll see, I'd love one, though!

Thanks for the tips. I also have all of those newbie RT anxieties going on. Not enough to keep me from being at my computer Friday @ noon though!!!
Unlike alot of people I will be driving in directly to the hotel. But buying a shirt still sounds like a fabulous idea!

Any first time nerves I have are all to do with trying to keep up with the exercising! The traveling to a new destination doesn't bother me at all, but I am completely intimidated about doing the workouts in a public forum rather than my own little fitness studio (the playroom). I'm still not sure I'll make the trip -- coming from California it does seem a little insane.....

Beth!

Come on, California's not that far! ;-) My coordinator co-hort Lorrayne is coming from San Diego and I know we have other Californians as well. People really do come from ALL over -- in 2007 we gave the prize for "came the farthest" to a gal who came from UGANDA. (Nope, I am not kidding!!! :))

I know a lot of people will chime in here to agree with me -- PLEASE don't imagine that these workouts will be intimidating!! They're really, really not. The focus is on having a good time, not on doing the all-out best we've ever done. Cathe also dials it back just a notch from what we'd do on her videos, for practical reasons such as:

(1) She's aware that all of us, herself included, have four workouts Saturday and Sunday (and a lot of Trippers arrive on Thursday night so as to take her regular Friday morning step class, too, even before the RT starts). That's a whole lotta working out without a lot of recovery time, and she is careful to pace us.

(2) During the step workout she doesn't do "traveling" moves that need space because there are so many of us in the room, and she keeps the other moves familiar and pretty simple because she knows most everyone in the room other than in the front few rows will be relying on her verbal cuing (and on how good the person in front of you is doing ;-)).

(3) During the sculpting classes when we use weights, it's not practical for everyone to haul multiple dumbbells to their spot (space constraints and number of dumbbells available for 105 people!) -- Most people use only a couple of pair, and almost everyone keeps it light (5's and 8's and 10's, generally at the most).

You'll see that everyone feels free to come and go, participate or not, stay for part of the class, go all out -- whatever suits your fancy. It is a completely non-judgmental environment.

Hope this helps ya!

RE: Beth!

Ok - I just have to chime in here. For anyone who is even thinking about it, please don't let any reservations keep you from trying! (Though the part of me that really wants in says NOOOOO - don't even try -- the fewer who try the greater our chances! }()

But I have to share this with you all. I have been lucky enough to attend, and from a purely selfish point of view, that is doing something ONLY for me, not my kids, my DH, my colleagues, etc., I have NEVER done anything better -- in my life. The RT was 3 separate levels of bliss for me.

1. I drove to NJ (I'm in Cleveland), and 6 hours of uninterrupted, blast-my-own-music-as-loud-as-I-want-or-just-have-complete-silence-with-no-kids-fighting-and-no-Disney-DVD-playing.... was one level of that bliss. Just some quiet time to see the sights as I went along and not be running everywhere else to do everything else from my "normal" day was amazing.

2. To be in one place with 100+ other fitness-minded people, who all share an appreciation for working hard and taking care of ourselves because we are blessed enough to BE ABLE to do that, is a bond like no other. Did I know everyone? Didn't even come close. Didn't need to, because there is a pervasive, unsurpassed energy that lifts you on the wings of fitness for every exhausting and fun-filled second you are there.

3. To be in that room with those 100+ other people with CATHE leading the charge --- there are no words. That is the 3rd level of bliss, which for me, which no words can accurately capture and describe.

What if this is the only chance you ever have to share that bond and experience something for you like you have never done before? Do you really want to pass that by? Sure you do --- give the rest of us that better chance! }( (Kidding!)

Kathy:

Cathe dialed it back? Really? Honey, I thought I saw Jesus during the Saturday morning kickboxing class when she had us running laps around the room! :7 This was taken after the first class:

The classes were a breeze for my beautiful and super fit Georgia peach coordinator friend, but Cathe wiped the floor with me! Actually, Cathe was very sweet and gentle. She coddled me and handled me with care because she knew that I was taking a leap of faith by being there. She encouraged modification and never made anyone feel “less than” for not being able to keep up with her. I just naturally push myself harder in a group setting, and there was so much energy in that room. I need to pace myself next time because I crashed after the first class and was dragging my wagon the rest of the weekend. This a marathon weekend, so pace yourself accordingly. Relax and have fun. :)

P.S. Kathy, I need a kick in the butt. I am backsliding with my veggie challenge. ;-)

Blessings,
Heather B.

RE: Beth!

So much greta information there!!! Thanks for the fri am step class info!!!! I will definately be adjusting my schedule to arrive in time for that now!!!
I also had worried about traveling moves on the step class. You guys are really help relieve anxieties. Now if you could just do something about the anxiety of being one of the 105 lucky ones!!!

Everything Kathy said is so true. There is just something about the kind of people Cathe attracts. I remember before coming on the '05 RT, that I was very self-conscious about what people would think of me as an instructor since I don't have THE "perfect 10" body. I struggle all the time to be in the best shape. BUT, once I arrived and started meeting everyone, all fears were gone. We all are truly an amazing breed of people! It was such a blast. I don't remember smiling and laughing as much as I have on RT's! Come prepared to have a GREAT time!

Kathy & all, thanks for the encouragement. I know it would be a great time if I make it. Not to mention the internet luck that's involved, I have to balance family things & budget, but I'm definitely considering it. It would be something to remember, I know.

thanks!

P.S. Kathy, I did the core max stability ball this morning and thought of you since I wouldn't have the ball if it weren't for you!! :)

This definitely is something that will remain with you for the rest of your life. The experiences one has not only in meeting Cathe, but others who can relate to you are priceless. I remember the first road trip I attended was when I was living in Northern Virginia. I was really nervous going somwhere where I didn't know know anyone. I truly almost didn't hop in my car to make the 3 hour drive to Glassboro. Boy, am I glad I did! I didn't regret one minute of that road trip. It truly was a wonderful experience. Each and every road trip to me is very special and unique. I get a chance to meet others who can relate to my passion in fitness and working out at home with Cathe. Many co-workers look at me like I have three heads. Who on earth works out at home and gets a decent workout? LOL! So, it's nice to be somewhere where others share the same passion as I do.

Looking forward in meeting as many of you trippers as I can! :*

Lorrayne

I just have to add that right now, TODAY, some of my most favorite people are those that I met on the last 2 RTs ('05 & '07) and would be LOST without my Peeps. (they know who they are) The experience is something BEYOND WORDS.
