Favorite sauces

So now that I have my oatmeal covered in the other thread :) I'm looking to make my quinoa bowls with veggies, chick peas, etc. Does anyone do this and what Trader Joe's sauce goes well with it? I don't like spicy but need to mix in something good :)

I don't add any sauce. Maybe Sirachi but that is hot. I generally have a bowl of rice, pasta or quinoa with veggies, beans, chickpeas. There is a new cookbook coming out Mar 31 Sprouted Kitchen Bowl and Spoon that I have been keeping an eye on.

I find that a little sauce can go a long way. Here are some of my favorites from TJs:

hummus (so yummy when stirred into warm things and TJ's has a million varieties...my fave is tomato basil hummus)
BBQ sauce (I like TJ's Bold & Smokey Kansas City Style)
Island Soyaki sauce (just shake well)
Spicy, Smoky Peach Salsa (despite the name, not actually very spicy)
a flavored mustard + sprinkle of nutritional yeast

Also, might sound weird, but TJ's sells boxes of veggie puree soups. You can open them and keep them in your fridge for 10 days. I will often use these to add flavor to veggie dishes or grain dishes, just adding a little splash to give it the "saucey" effect (and not the "soupy" effect). :D I really like the Creamy Roasted Corn and Red Pepper flavor. The Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato soup is a goodie, too.

Lisa, will you go shopping with me. I need some new, fresh ideas. We have a TJs here.

I second the vote for nutritional yeast. It's good with Bragg's liquid aminos, if you like Bragg's (kind of like tamari but has its own unique flavor).

I love to whip up some tahini or cashew butter with some miso or tamari and throw in a little lemon juice, too. Yummy, savory goodness with some protein and good fat. Cumin is yummy in it, too. Or ginger (powdered, or freeze fresh ginger and microplane it over you food).

Yes, another good combo! I use Bragg's liquid aminos as a substitute for soy sauce. It is so versatile and adds lovely flavor to dishes. I particularly like to use it when stir frying so that I can add moisture without having to add excessive amounts of oil/butter (don't get me wrong, I love healthy fats, but I do NOT love overly greasy foods).

Coconut aminos are good to use in place of Bragg's liquid aminos. Great flavor as well. Melissa Joulwan author of "WELL FED" has a great recipe for Sunshine Sauce. It's a peanut sauce made with sunflower seed butter. Uses coconut aminos, and very delicious. It never lasts long enough in my house, we eat it with a spoon. Have to make a double batch.

Karen, I'd love it! Not gonna lie...I've taken several friends on TJ's tours, since it is still new and unfamiliar territory to many locals here in Idaho (I grew up in the Southwest, where TJ's are everywhere). When shall we meet up? :)

Lisa

You are a sweetheart, I will have to visit family in Idaho more often.

Yes to coconut aminos! Savory goodness!
I am learning something here every day. Never heard of coconut aminos! Can you get this at TJ's? I had heard of Bragg's, thought it was a vinegar.
I don't think TJs has coconut aminos or Bragg's (but I totally stand to be corrected on this one). They don't even have tamari (just reduced sodium soy sauce). You can find both at Whole Foods. Bragg's is a soy product, much like tamari/soy sauce, rich in amino acids, salty, doesn't have the same high acidity of vinegar.

Here is a great recipe for a salad dressing with only coconut aminos (or you can sub tamari), coconut vinegar (or other vinegar or lemon/lime juice), raw cashew butter, and water. So tasty, so easy. I just half the recipe and mix it up in a mug and it's enough to coat a large salad.

Karen, that sunshine sauce looks great (I googled it) -- will be making that for sure! Not sure what I'll put it on, but pretty sure I'll sprinkle some TJs Thai lime chili almonds on toppa that sucka...
I'd like to be put on the list for the TJs RT, please! ;)

Deb, Bragg is a brand. Under the Bragg label, you'll find lots of things including apple cider vinegar, olive oil, salad dressing, nutritional yeast and, as we've mentioned, liquid aminos. Whole Foods is the place where I buy my Bragg products.

Karen, thanks for the heads up on coconut aminos. I've never heard of those before! I'm thinking that's probably also a Whole Foods purchase like Roz said. I've seen coconut oil at TJ's but not coconut aminos. And I love that you eat the Sunshine Sauce by the spoonful! (Any recipe that can get my spoon out of cookie butter deserves a gold medal!)

Roz, TJ's Road Trip. Love it! We can make t-shirts and everything! ;)

I should have never bought the cookie butter. I have tablespoon'd myself into half the jar. I'm going to have to check myself into cookie butter rehab. I'm definitely overdosing. Oh, the goodness!

My name is Lisa and I'm a TJ's Speculoos cookie butter addict. I have consumed so much of the stuff during my current pregnancy that I am pretty sure my baby girl is going to come out smelling like cookie butter--which will definitely take that yummy baby smell to a whole new level! ;)

But hey, I think there's room for a little cookie butter in an overall healthy diet. It's all about balance, right?

LOL Lisa I was just poised to say...
Karen, do you want to join our check in? It's ostensibly about pregnancy and that 'working out' business but really is a cookie butter fan club/confessional. Let's be honest here.

I use lemon juice and olive oil on my quinoa salad, and add a hunk of chopped cilantro ( you said you don't like spicy, but if you did, just a little red pepper makes it amazing). It is delicious and fresh; I've had people who won't eat quinoa ask for my recipe.

Coconut Aminos - I've had to order mine online, haven't been able to find them anywhere.
