False pregnancy in dog

Has anyone out there ever exprienced a false preganancy with their dog?

We have chocoate labs that we are trying to breed, waited 2 years until they were old enough, thought we had a succesful breeding. She has had all the signs, weight gain, 1 week of being picky about eating, 1 week of moodiness, etc. Took her to vet yesterday for x-ray & he said there is nothing there!! I am so dispointed. Have read what to expect now but would like to hear from someone who has experienced it.

I haven't experienced false pregnancy with my dog, she was sucessfully bred twice and there were never any signs that she was pregnant, she was just her normal happy self.

However, when she came out of heat this year in January without being bred, she was moody and crabby, ate more than usual and then was picky about her food. I am not sure that what you describe are signs of pregnancy, or only results of a drop in hormones. My understanding is that false pregnancy also manifests in milk production, nesting behavior, etc.

I don't think there is much you can do at this point, it should resolve itself. The homeopathic remedy Pulsatilla helps alleviate the symptoms.

Good luck!

I will look into the homeopathic rememdy, thank you!! That & maybe healthy weight formula dog food for a while, the girl put on 15 lbs!!! Her boobs are bigger than mine. She goes to the vet later today to make sure she doesn't have an infection.
I did read all about the whole nesting & becoming partial to a particular toy as if it were a pup. Bracing myself for her emotional state. Poor thing, I hope she recovers quickly. I'll need to put her in training to slim her back down.

Have you ever used this before on your dog? Where did you buy it & how much do you give your dog? Currently she weighs 93.2 lbs, 15 pounds over her normal which could stand to be 5 lbs less.

Thanks

I have used it on my dog when she came out of heat beginning of this year. I buy it at the health food store (Whole Foods in my case) or online. I used Pulsatilla 30C, 3 pellets every 3 hours on the first day, and then 5 pellets 3 x per day (this was according to the recommendation of my naturopathic vet).

My dog is 35 lbs but with homeopathic remedies, the dosage doesn't depend on weight.

If it makes you feel any better, my dog packed on weight when she came out of heat as well as after the puppies were weaned. It didn't matter how much I exercised her or what I fed her.

I hope everything turns out well for you and your doggie. Mine will have her last litter by the end of this year, she is going into heat by the end of this month and I sure am not looking forward to this.

My Dh took her to vet for an actual exam this afternoon, he wasn't there when the x-ray was done. He says he believes she is indeed pregnant & will do another x-ray next week. So nerve wracking! Will let you know how we progress.

Tami:

I had a golden retriever who fooled us once with a pregnancy that the vet said was not evident and the next time was a false pregnancy that produced milk, but no puppies. This was all after her first pregnancy which was a complicated one. Here's her back
ground. Sometime during her first pregnancy the litter died, but she did not abort so we didn't know. Since she did not abort she developed a horrible infection that had to be treated by the vet. The vet said the infection may reoccur and that she may not be able to get pregnant again. I believe we waited until the next year and tried again. This time no signs or symptoms except for a vaginal discharge. We took her to the vet and he thought she was developing an infection and did not think she was pregnant. This was almost 30 years ago so they did not do ultrasounds or xrays very often back then. A few weeks later she went into labor and delivered 9 healthy puppies which my mom would refer to as our "9 little infections". Here's some pictures. We tried to breed her 1 more time later on. That time she went through all the symptoms, developed milk, was looked at by a vet who thought he felt puppies, but when the time came, no labor, no puppies, no infection (thank goodness) just a good old fashion false pregnancy. Since I've seen both sides, I know what you are going through and wish you luck. Hope everything works out.

What beautiful babies!! After hearing your story I guess I have no reason to be stressed out! It seems like the entire pregnancy can be a big maybe unless you have an ultrasound, which we obviously have not yet. Will hold out for the x-ray next Tues @ 4:45, hubby takes her again so he will know first.x( She does seem a little bigger each day. Poor girl, it's supposed to be 90 degrees here in New York Friday. It stinks being pregnant in the heat, plus w/a fur coat.

I'll be sure to let you know what we find out & thanks for your help & lovely pictures!!
