Ezekiel Bread

Has anyone ever tried this bread? I got it because I heard about it on Jillian Michaels podcast. The taste of it is okay, but it is so dry! Does anyone eat this? Any hints or tricks on how to not make it as dry? I would like to keep eating it because it doesn't contain as much garbage as other breads found in grocery stores.

If you don't eat this bread, is there any other bread that doesn't have a bunch of cr@p in it, but that tastes kind of ok?

Thanks!

I used to eat Ezekiel bread, but it IS dry, and that's one of the reasons I don't buy it anymore. It's like chewing cardboard. So sorry, I'm not much help. I have gone back to Pepperidge Farms Naturals 100% Whole Wheat - it's the lesser of many of the evils, I suppose.

I actually liked it and thought it tasted nutty and yummy. I don't buy it regularly because it costs so darned much.

To get rid of the "garbage" I make my own bread. I just love to bake bread, so it's no problem for me.

I just bought a loaf of Ezekiel this weekend. I agree it's dry. Adding extra peanut butter to it didn't seem to help. :)

Are the Alvarado Street sprouted breads any better? The grocery stores around here carry those as well.

Like Emily, I used to buy it but stopped. I kept it in the freezer because it takes DH and I quite awhile to go through a loaf of bread, but the slices were impossible to separate without the bread breaking apart. I've gone back to Pepperidge Farm as well. Of all the commercial breads, I find Pepperidge Farm Naturals to be the best -- it contains a little bit of honey but the amount is negligible, and there are no additives or preservatives. Brownberry is pretty good, too.

The only other bread I buy is one made in a local bakery. It's a whole grain 5 seed bread and it's delicious but very expensive -- about $5 a loaf  , so I reserve it for special occasions.

Gayle - I personally *love* Alvarado Street's Essential Flaxseed Bread. I find it very nutty and moist. I couldn't stand the dryness of the Ezekiel bread. I can't find the Flax in my area of NY anymore so I stock up when I go to my mother's in MA...6-7 loaves at a time and throw them in the freezer.

I buy it, keep most in freezer, a few pieces in fridge. Toast before using. I use almond butter, usually often open faced rather than sandwich style. Or mayo or mayo subsitute w/ avocado, sprouts, tomato and sometimes veggie bacon. Tuna salad is good too. Occasionally butter and nutritional yeast but that is getting kinda out there~

If you can get it in your areas, Milton's brand breads are really good! They have several different varieties now, but I think the most popular one is their Multi-Grain bread. It's really high in fiber, and tastes great! I actually love all of their flavors, and would recommend any of them!

I used to, but I've found (and love) Rudy's Organic Breads. I usually get the 100% whole wheat. I store it in the fridge and it keeps for about a week.

Karin,

I'm with you. I've tried it and tried to like it but it is like eating toasted cardboard.

I've been buying the Peppridge Farm 100% whole wheat for DS for his PBJ's and when I finish off one of his sandwiches (only ever so rarely, really! :p ) I find I really enjoy it.

I think it is the lesser of the evils. I know PF makes some multigrains so I'm going to look into those as well as an alternative to the Ezekiel.

Glad I'm not alone!

This is pretty much the only type of bread I eat, with rare exceptions, since I think sprouted bread is far superior to flour bread.

Try either microwaving it for 3-5 seconds, or steaming it for around 5-10 seconds or so (put a steamer rack over some boiling water---I use bamboo steamers). That will soften it a bit (the steaming adds moisture as well, so might be a better choice--but keep your eye on it, as you don't want it to get too soft. Find the amount of steaming that works for you).

I usually buy the Ezekial burger buns, and put them in a 350-degree oven for a few minutes before using them. They are then 'toasty' rather than dry.

Alvarado California Bread or the Sprouted Barley Bread are the best breads and the only ones I use. They are costly but worth it.

Thanks everyone. I am glad that I am not alone in not liking the Ezekiel bread. I am going to try Kathryn's tricks so that I can make it through the whole loaf with minimal gagging, but I don't think I will buy this again.

I am going to look for PF 100% natural bread and the Rudi's bread.

Thanks.

I love Ezekiel bread. I usually buy the sprouted grain and keep it in the frig because I can't use all of it before it goes bad.

I think for me the difference is no flour!! No preservatives. I guess that would make it softx(

I like to put almond butter and honey on mine. But I also like to toast it to extra crunchy. I like to toast it and put sliced turkey and mustard on it. The bread is hard - and DH laughs when I'm biting into it!:9

I bought a loaf of the 7 grain sprouted bread and I like it microwaved for about 10 seconds then lightly toasted. I put extra natural PB on it and eat it with a banana for breakfast. It takes a little getting used to but now I like it. I also tried the cinnamon raisin this morning and it is quite good done the same way.
