eye exam question

Hello,
I'm 42 years old and the last time I had any sort of eye exam was when I was in elementary school. My question is do I go to an optometrist or opthomoligist and does insurance cover for eye exams? I'm in az any referals out there. Thank you

Lourdes

I would go for the opthamologist. You haven't had an exam in a really long time plus you (we :) ) are getting to an age that it's good to have our overall eye health checked.

I would just go to the optometrist. They have very cool machines now that look into the eye. If they find anything suspect then they will refer you to an opthamologist.

Unless you have coverage for eye care most insurances will not cover eye exams or glasses. An opthamologist appt. would only be covered if there was a disease of the eye.

You would want to check with your insurance provider to see what they cover. They may want you to go to specific eye doctors. Most likely you will have to pay a percentage. My employer gives me vision insurance, but I still have to pay some out of pocket. I go yearly, but I wear contacts and it's required for my prescription.

I just go to lenscrafters and they do a great job. They can tell you the best option for insurance coverage. For example - we are AAA members and often we get a better deal through them for eye exams than our BCBS health plan. They can look at all our available options and tell us which saves us the most money.
