Experience with joint replacement

Hi all,

This may be an absurd question for this site - or maybe not. I am only 45 but as I've posted before, I've been going through extensive PT for almost a year now. While I've made very good progress, I'm reaching the point of accepting that I WILL need hip replacement surgery. There really doesn't seem to be much of an option.

I've done very high-impact workouts for half of my life- most likely with very improper for much of it. After severely spraining my ankle a few years ago and persisting to workout hard I ended up causing a LOT of damage.

I have been consulting with my wonderful PT and although it is not all that common for a 'youngster' like me to have this done- she does have two other ladies about my age who have been through the surgery for similar reasons. I will set up time to talk with them about their prep & recovery (thank you, Cathe for helping me stay in shape with LIS!) so being young and strong will help.

Who out there has any experience with this type of "stuff"!

Thanks!
Pam

I meant to say -improper form!! See!! Pain screws with me! haha!

Hi! First I just want to say I'm sorry you even have to deal with this. Being only 30, I'm noticing aches and pains (especially in my right hip) and I know a lot is due to improper high impact activity. I'm sure I will also have to do this at some point in my life. Anyways, I'm a physical therapist and in my experience, those who are younger going through this surgery recover very well and get back to prior activity level rather quickly. My brother who is only 35 had a total hip done this past January. Seeing him today you would never know he had it done and he says he even forgets sometimes. The first night and the first time he had to stand up out of bed after the surgery were the hardest for him. After that he recovered really quickly. Since you are healthy and have been active I'm sure your recovery will be quick.

Thank you, KariV! I would rather get it done sooner than later. I have a spefic type of limp - can't remember what it's called since it has a really long name! It seems like a miracle to not be in constant pain. I'm not a big fan of pain-meds so that doesn't help. I take ALL of the necessary supplements but I'm not so sure that they actually help all that much.

Thanks again! I'll keep you posted.

Pam
