Exercising thru pregnancy book

Cathlete
Hi. I am at 4 weeks, and JUST found out!! I see that Sheila and Cathe both recommend Exercising Through Your Pregnancy by James Clapp. But apparently it's out of print. Ebay and Half.com don't have it. Maybe someone here has a copy they no longer need, or can tell me where I can buy one. In the meantime, can I exercise at my usual intensity at this stage in the game? Should I begin to drop my weights a bit lighter? Thank you for all your help. :)

Hi and congratulations! Yes, if you are feeling fine and up to it, you can keep going with your current exercise routine, however, be sure to never get breathless. You should be able to say 2 to 5 word sentences while exercising. If your intensity starts to creep up beyond that, then simply cut back on intensity and let the heart rate come down a bit. As for weights, strive for maintenance toning. Keep your weight selection moderate, since, for now, heavy weight tends to spike the heart rate and later on can stress the tendons and ligaments a bit too much.

Overall, your fitness workouts should now aim to keep your cardiovasular system and muscles conditioned for a more comfortable pregnacy as well as keeping you strong for your delivery day. Now is the time to think of exercise as an overall maintenance program as opposed to setting and/or striving to reach goals.

I must stress that you need to stay VERY HYDRATED at all times too. Good Luck!

Thank you, Cathe. Congratulations to you, too! I appreciate you having this forum. Good luck with your pregnancy!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!! :) Just as you are 4 weeks into your first I am currently four weeks away from having my first. When I first found out I was pregnant I also tried to find James Clapp's book but was unsuccessful. I also had several companies do searches for a used copy with no luck. So I purchased Birgitta Gallo's "Expecting Fitness" instead, which I found to be very informative. So you might want to give that a try.

Good Luck to you!!

I also had no luck purchasing this book, unfortunately. I do remember hearing that Dr. Clapp is in process of writing a 2nd edition of the book -- but I have no idea when it would come out. (But as soon as it does, I'll be buying it even if I'm not pregnant then anymore!). I also bought "Expecting Fitness" and think it's an excellent resource. Another book that's been recommeded here is Fit to Deliver -- I think you can purchase it at www.fittodeliver.com; don't know if it's carried in other bookstores.

You also might want to try your local library. I didn't have much luck with that, but I know other folks here have.

Good luck!

I don't have this particular book, but I do have Birgitta Gallo's Expecting Fitness. She uses the Clapp book as a resource, and from what I understand, her book is very similar to his. The main difference, I think, is that her book is much less scientific and technical while still presenting the same information. If you are interested in this book, email me and we can work something out. My email is [email protected].

I just wanted to let you know that I was finally able to get a copy of Exercising Through Your Pregnancy by James Clapp. The way I got it was through Amazon.com. You can actually post a request for a used book on their site and name the price you will pay and the condition you will accept the book in. If someone lists the book for sale and it matches your requirements they will bill your credit card and the seller ships the book out to you. It took me from June until today to get a match for this book. I lowered my standards for the condition of the book down to good and I think that helped. It's funny the match was found the day after I ordered Expecting Fitness. :p Still Im excited to be able to read both books now.

I'm currently trying to get pregnant with my second child and hope to be joining you all on this board soon! :) Just thought I would pass along this information in case anyone wanted to try to get the Clapp book.

Alison, I went to Amazon last week, and it was unavailable.

I assume you were on a waiting list. That's a good idea. I'm glad you got the book.:)
