Hi all,

My mother-in-law told me she's been doing neck exercises for years to fix her family inherited neck jowls and skin "waddle". I was under the impression that neck exercises were a myth....is she making stuff up??

Does anyone know if there are really exercises to make your neck look better????? I have been looking online, and can't find any info, except people's opinions. Is this just a myth??

Most neck wattles are loose skin, or fat and skin, and seem to be hereditary. If someone who is overweight has them, they may improve when that person loses weight.

Jowls are on the sides of the chin, and are somewhat hereditary as well. I have a tendency towards jowls, and they are more noticeable when I gain a bit of weight, so I have to keep below a certain body fat/weight level to keep them at bay.

There are devices that supposedly help firm the jaw/neckline, like "facial flex," but if you look at their website, and their supposedly unretouched before-and-after photos, you'll see that the lighting is different (more shadows in the 'before' photos) and the subjects are posed to make their results look better (ie: "before" photo is complete profile, while "after" photo has them looking to the side, but with the chin turned somewhat to the camera). I don't know if the product works at all, but the misleading photos make me very skeptical.

In her book "The Core Problem," physical therapist Peggy Brill shows some facial exercise that are supposed to help (one is based on the yoga "Lion" pose) and for which you don't have to buy a gadget.
