exercise modifications

Hi Sheila-

I'm 3 months pregnant and had a couple questions concerning exercise modifications since I am now entering my 2nd trimester. My doctor said I can be in the supine position till the 20th week vs for only the first trimester(12-14 wks)?? I know there are conflicting theories on that position. In addition, is it still ok to lift weights overhead as long as I decrease my weights and ensure proper back support? I know the fear of the valsalva maneuver is the reason that doctors don't want pregnant women lifting overhead. Is it also ok to do step aerobics, which is obviously high impact as long as I listen to my body, or is it too unsafe for the baby as far as all the bouncing around that occurs? I planned on jumping less and staying more grounded as the baby got bigger. Thanks for all your helpful info. and suggestions.

I read that you can stay on your back until 20 weeks which is what I did. I switched doctors due to moving around 24 weeks. Here is what I was told. My first doctor said listen to your body and didn't tell me I needed to modify impact at this point. I did high impact including cathe and mindy until my 5th month. when I switched doctors, my current doctor said weights were fine , just don't increase poundage. He told me to stop high impact which I did at this point. Currently with 2 weeks to go I continue to do step, modified low and use my weights as before, although I've lowered by a pound or 2. I continue to do military presses and french presses. Hope this helps.
