Exercise and colds--restarting?

I always have trouble with this one and usually wind up making myself sicker--how soon do you restart working out after a cold? No fever, no cough, but a pretty tough cold that had me feeling like I was run over by a truck. Today is the first day that I'm feeling a bit better--I'm finally not sneezing nonstop. Wondering if it would be safe to restart my cardio tomorrow? then weights on Thursday?

Hi!

First off you should wait until you feel 80% or better back to yourself. And then very light intensity that goes with the weights as well, as your body is still fighting and rebuilding. You don't want to take anything away from it at this time, or you'll just get sick again. As it sounds out, you've tried before. Do some really light work and then slowly build back up, it usually won't take long as a lot of times moving around helps once you get past the fever, caughing, sneezing, and feeling yucky. Just listen to your body and don't push it, it will let you know when it's ready to be challenged.

Bunbun, I resumed with my workouts last Saturday, when my cold was about 80% better, like Kit suggested. I did C&W, which is an "easier" workout and used heavier weights for the weight segments, plus tacked on the upper body premix of BC to make it harder. And that was just right to kick off my body. The day after I did L&G, with very light weights. Yesterday I felt much better and started heavy lifting. Just take it "easy" at first (we all know Cathe's never easy:) ) -- I thought that if I was about 80% better, I'd do 80% of what my body's capable of. That was the modified C&W workout. Then I eased off the day after, then pushed hard the day after that. Today I'm taking it easy again, and I'm doing it this way 'til my cold is finally gone.

I think I overestimate how good I feel, based on really wanting to get back to working out. Today is the first day I've even thought about wanting to workout--my legs have that "I've been sitting too long" feeling. But am not doing anything today--going to give it another day and see. It's hard to judge what 80% is...

For me, 80% is when the sneezing and sore throat are totally gone, and I don't have to blow my nose that much anymore. No chest congestion as well. Hope this gives you an idea and isn't TMI.;-)

Nope, not TMI at all. :) Thanks. Cold seems to be a quick-moving virus, because I am feeling much better at the end of the day. Probably do a half cardio workout tomorrow morning to start. I figure that's safe.

Bunbun,

Glad your cold is getting together, I basically eveluate myself based on energy, as well as no sneezing, coughing, etc, and little congestion as I don't want to be hacking in the middle of a workout, or have my nose turn into a water fountain.

Did you manage to start your workout today or still holding off?

Kit

Thanks, Kit. I did half my usual cardio in the morning yesterday. It was ok--blistering hot here so it was hard to tell if I was tired because of my cold or the heat (even with the AC on, my workout room isn't cooled enough). Am actually about to try a full cardio workout this morning, though I will stick to an easy day workout. Am not sneezing or coughing anymore--just have some leftover congestion. My bigger problem is being tired--possibly from my cold, but I suspect it's the result of the tremendous pressure I am currently under at work, as I woke up at 5 a.m., worrying about work.

Thank you for this thread. I woke up yesterday with the same thing: sore throat, stuffy/runny nose and that same "run over by a truck" feeling - no energy. I will definitely take in the advice given here before working out after work.
