Excessive sweating

Hi Everyone
I am 45 years old and am just now having a problem with excessive sweating under my arms. I do not think this is a hot flash becasue it is happening in just one spot. Has this happened to anyone else??

Hi Sofia,

I'm 22, and I've had this probably for a good 5 years. It's the worst when I am nervous or anxious, but on a daily basis, my underarms just sweat so much. For whatever reason, my right is the worst. Oddly enough, I have a cousin with the same thing, but it's her left. It's called hyperhydrosis, and some people get botox shots to paralyze their sweat glands. There's a prescription deoderant you can get from a dermatologist called Drysol. It's like an alcohol smelling roll on that honestly hurts sometimes if you use it right after you've shaved. It is the only thing that works aside from botox and surgery though. It doesn't stop the sweating completely, but if you use it consistently, it will make a noticeable difference.

Editted to add that I feel for you. This is such an embarrassing problem. It is annoying as well when you start to worry about what shirts you can wear!

Hope that helps,

Well..I have to chime in. I myself have severe hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating)and have suffered with this for 25+ years. Mine is in my hands, feet, underarms, behind the knees and groin areas. Very unpleasant! However, I am taking Dr prescribed medication (Ditropan XL--bladder control medication). One of the side effects are reduced sweating. Also, I use Drysol which is Dr prescribed as well. I only have to use it once a week...it's that strong. However, there is on over the counter version of Drysol called Certain Dri and it works great. However it has less of the ingredients that are used in Drysol. So...you may want to check into that. Just a word of warning....it is kinda irritating at first because you get a lot of tingles and itching at first when you use it. But, it's gone after about an hour. It's not that bad.

Also, there are the surgeries however, after researching it. I have only heard nothing but bad about it. Mainly that it did stop the sweating in one area...but it transfered to another area of the body. So...if you got the problem corrected in the underarms....it moved to the back after the surgery. I heard it was worse. I know someone who's son got the surgery and he regrets it every single day that he did it.

Believe me...I know how aweful it is to have this problem. There are MANY fabrics that I can not wear as well as colors that I can't wear either. It's miserable! I know! Also, having this problem has directed me in the fitness field where being sweaty is acceptable. I could never be a seamstress because of my hands nor could I be a computer technition--I would get shocked! Really! On a treadmill I got shocked just from holding the panel on top. Sigh...it's NOT fun!

I am very sorry to hear that you have this problem. Being a sufferer of this myself...I know it's hard!

I've heard about peepole using Ditropan for this purpose. Does it have any side effects?

Also, I'd just like to second that surgery does not seem to be a good option. Many people develop "compensatory sweating" in other areas after surgery.

Oh- is there a trick to using the Drysol? I use it everyday and still sweat a bit too much.

Thanks!

Oh no...no side effects to the Ditropan XL at all! Other than not having accidents while doing those plyojacks and tuck jumps! Giggle... But, seriously...there are no other side effects. It helps SOME but not too bad. I use to take a very very strong RX and it wouldn't let me sweat at all. I couldn't even work in the yard because I would overheat. So....that was way too extreme!!! But, Ditropan is a good match for me.

Drysol...not sure if there is a trick. I use it at night and leave it on all night long and then wash it off when I shower. But, that is 1 time a week. You may have to use it more often. I can't use it on my hands and feet because of the drying factor. Odd...sweaty hands but it dries the skin so much that it's like putting alcohol on my hands with a bunch of dry open wounds. Not pleasant....
