Ever run a marathon?

Hi Cathe:
I am considering runnning a marathon and wondered whether you have ever done so. If so, do you have any specific advise, tips, tricks or favorite websites? Thanks, Rachel

Rachel,

I have run a marathon before - once - that's it! LOL. But it was one of the most reqarding experiences of my life. Mentally, physically, spiritually - it transformed me into a new person. Hard to believe all of that can come from running a race, but its so much more - the training, the discipline, the friendships you make with running partners, it can change your life!

With that said, I don't know where you live, but you may want to look into USAFit. They are an organization that sponsors marathon training programs across the country. Here in Houston, they sponsor HoustonFit along with others. Check them out. www.usafit.com. I think they have online programs too.

Runnersworld also has great advice for for begginer marathoners as well.

And also, a great "lessons learned" for me, if I had to do it over again, and I'm sure I will as soon as I'm done with school, is to focus on two things: stretching/yoga, and upper body development. Why? One, stretching is so important to preventing injuries. I can't tell you how many folks, myself included, almost gave up running because we thought we had bad knees or bad ankles and couldn't run long distances. Come to find out all we needed to do was learn to stretch properly! Yoga once or twice a week will help keep everything limber. Second, you will never realize how ever your head really is until you have run 18 miles of a marathon. Help this by building your chest, back and shoulders. Your legs will get plenty of work from the running, but teh upper body often gets neglected. You don't have to get buff, just strong!

I wish you the best of luck and have fun!

I am not even close to being Cathe, but I have run 2 marathons and one half. I am running the marathon in Memphis in December and the Disney marathon in Jan. The best advice I can give you is never give up and don't worry about your time. Just finish. The best quote I ever heard was from John Bingham and he said "There is someone in worse shape than you training for a marathon right now."

I used Hal Higdon's beginners training schedule which you can get off the internet. It worked for me. Also John Bingham has a good training schedule for all types in his terrific book Marathoning for Mortals.

Well, sorry I probably talked too much, but this is my favorite subject.

As far as Cathe, I couldn't do any of her leg work while training. The training was enough on my legs, but I did upper body 2 times a week.

Good luck,

Have not, would love to-----

and--the only advise I can give comes second-hand from a SIL of mine who trained (ran) solely on the treadmill--- Do NOT do this!! Run outdoors also, as it is much harder to run long distances (or short ones for that matter) outside, than on the 'mill'. She ran one in San Diego, and although she finished, it was mucho hard for her, because she did all of her previous running on the treadmill.

I can go on forever on the treadmill---mine has actually smelled 'hot'. :7 But, I can only go so far outside before hitting a wall. And, she is 20 years younger than I am. ;-)
