endurance vs. strength

I know that we don't workout only to look good but we do it for our health as well. In spite of that, I was wondering which form of weight lifting gives better definition and visual results. I like the cut look but not the bulky look, if that makes sense. Which type of weight lifting should I be doing? I am assuming endurance training is lighter with more reps and strength training is heavier with fewer reps but to exhaustion, is that right? Can you also recommend Cathe workouts that have the training type that gives more definition? Thanks for your help! You ladies are awesome. Vicky

Overall you should cross train using both methods and you will see definition. The single most important issue for visible definition is decreasing your body fat (no lower than 13%), so diet is key.

To answer your question, there is no one answer. It really comes down to what your muscles are predominatly made up of; type 1 muscle fibers are slow twitch meaning they respond to slower type movements such as long distance running, slow and heavy strength training. Type 2 muscle fibers are the opposite, respond to sprinting, endurance type strength training. So for an example; I am slow as a turtle - don't ask me to sprint because I just don't have it in me. Long distance with no time limit is great - I can go and go. When I do a slow and heavy rotation I see immediate definition, but I really try to focus heavily on endurance training because that's where I need work - Hope that makes sense.

Bottom line is that you need to figure out what works best for you, but you shouldn't focus on only one type of weight training.
