My dh had a ekg for bordeline hypertension. It said it was probable noraml variant for poor r progression. They are not sending him to a cardiologist becaseue they said this is a fine reading. I asked him why it said probrable and he didn't ask. He has a family history of anxiety. Is a probably noraml variant a good reading like they said. Thnaks for any info. Karen

Hi Karen..I don't have a specialty in EKG...but r waves are the highest waves on a reading. It's a measure of the electrical impulse that is sent through the heart. I'm guessing it says "poor r wave progression". There are numerous reasons for it. One includes an MI (or heart attack) and other reasons, such as poor quality of the test, bad placement of the leads (or patches), or it could be nothing. In my experience all EKG's are read over by a cardiologist. If this is not the case, have it sent to one. We only have one heart...

Good luck ....Amber

Hi Karen...probable..yeah yukkie word, I'm not sure why...likely to avoid panic and or liability if they are right or wrong. With medicine there is no exact science. It certainly doesn't make anyone feel better.

It's like saying it's more consistent with this, over this.

But then again even when an EKG shows an obvious heart attack they still must confirm with labs. So it's pretty easy to say, an EKG is never confirmation of anything, it's the symptoms and the clinical picture put together that equal a diagnosis.

Usually with EKG's that show an abnormality it's the comparison year to year, or test to test that matters. It's like establishing a baseline.

Am I making any sense at all? Sounds like mumbo jumbo I know.
