I know that egg whites are good, alot of protein and such, but what about the yokes? I know some don't like them and throw them away, but are they bad in terms of clean eating??

OOHHHHHHHH NNOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Its another egg yolk inquiry. RUN!!! (Sorry Maeghan, nothing against you or your harmelss inquiry. It's just that another similar question was asked once: the egg yolk post now lives in infamy.) I don't like yolks, well , I don't like eggs and I'm not really qualified to answer. But I think they're not all that bad in terms of clean eating if kept to a minimum. :) :)

If you do a search for egg yolks you'll see the thread that was begun in February. I'm reluctant to post the link lest the flame wars begin again. You're fine - it's just that I bet a lot of us kind of cringed when we saw the topic. Your question is a very legitimate one and I'm sure some who are better educated than I am on the nutrient values of yolks will give you a better answer than I did!

Yeah, I just read that post......... Well.
Seriously, I just want to know if the yolks are a no-no for CLEAN EATING. Thats it.
Thanks Lorrie for the heads up.

Hey Megadoodle!!

Unless you have a very high cholesterol level there is no reason to avoid the yolks. The yolk is nutrient dense and contains ALL of the fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), as well as other nutrients. I eat several whole eggs a week and my last lipid profile and triglyceride levels were the best I'd ever had. Eat and enjoy!
:)

Thank you Michele. I enjoy the yolk (to dip my toast in hehe). I new the whites were good protein, so I wanted to eat more, but was wondering about the yolk. Thanks, now I will enjoy the whole egg, need the vitamins anyway!!

Maeghan:

Here is what I do....I make an omelette of one whole egg (for the nutrients) and 3 more egg whites only (for the protein). Just seems to work for me that way and I like it better than just whites.
I will also have a "dippy egg" once in a blue moon!

Paula

Ya, know, I have never had an omelet! But that suggestion sounds really good, so maybe I will try one tomorrow!!! Thanks Paula!
What do you typically put in your omelets?

Can't recall the facts, but I've read several times that yokes are very nutrient dense. They supposedly help with brain function. I always eat them!

I love, love, love egg yolks! However, high cholesterol runs in both sides of my family so, even though mine is okay for now, I do watch my cholesterol intake. I do have one hard boiled egg every day for breakfast but, every other day, I remove the yolk and fill the white with some homemade guacamole. YUM :9 ! I can't take credit for the idea...I saw it on FitTV lol.

I eat egg yolks a couple times a week, but often used whites only.
Moderation is what works for me!

Don't worry about bringing this up, from what I have seen, this boards learns from previous threads that go bad, so I am not sure if you needed to be warned!

I have just finished reading a few books which refer to clean eating. The yolks are about 5 grams of fat each and are high in cholestrol. What was suggested in a couple of the books was to do as LuckeeLadee said and use one yolk to every 3 or 4 whites (BFFM said 1 to 6).

If you are fixing eggs for a meal then (if I remember correctly) there are about 6 grams of protein to each white and so by adding a couple of extra whites you come out with a good amount of protein for the meal without adding too much fat grams.

I have been making breakfast eggs with sauteed bell peppers, red onions and mushrooms lately and putting it ontop of a piece of whole wheat bread like an open faced sandwich. Easy to fix and quick to eat. (I sautee with butter flavored cooking spray in a nonstick pan.)

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. I think someone has already mentioned that (properly produced) egg yolks are very nutritious, containing vitamins A and D, necessary sulfur-containing proteins, EPA and DHA, choline, and also a substance that keeps cholesterol moving in the blood. The fat in the yolk helps your body to better absorb the nutrients in the egg, including those all important amino acids, calcium, methoinine, iron, phosphorus, etc. When I make scrambled eggs, I usually throw in an extra yolk or too. But then again, I am not one for politically correct nutrition or the USDA's little pyramid, revised or not.

I'm coming to your house for breakfast! I wouldn't dream of pitching an egg yolk.
