Effexor

Hi -

I tried Effexor when prozac stopped working for PMS. I gained 50 lbs in less than a year - was depressed ALL the time (instead of 2 weeks/month) and when I missed a dose I had very weird brain "zaps."

It felt like an electric jolt zapping around my head when I moved my eyes. I had a very difficult time withdrawing from this drug due to the brain zaps as well as flu-like symptoms - body aches and fatigue.

Experiences are different for everyone, but I would recommend prozac over Effexor (or any of the other antidepressants for that matter!) any day.

I have tried effexor and had very good results with it. It worked great for me and helped a lot. I did have issues when I was weaning off with dizziness, but that only lasted a week.

Before that I tried Wellbutrin and it didn't seem to work for me at all. There are so many options - it may be necessary to try a few different ones.

I took almost all of them at some point trying to find the right one but Effexor I was on for a while and it helped with depression a little but I lost my sex drive completely and when I got off it I also had the brain zaps when I moved my eyes for about 3 days. I take Lexapro now and I love it. What works for one person may not work for another unfortunately.

My DH is on Effexor. It has worked for him when other antidepressants have not. He has been on it quite a while with not too many side effects except mild sexual side effects. He tried to get off it recently in order to try a different medication. He had TERRIBLE withdrawal symptoms including the "brain zaps" others have mentioned. It was so disasterous, he had to go back on it right away. It varies so much for each individual. Unfortunately finding the right medication can take quite a while - at least in our experience.

Good Luck!

ETA My doctor calls it "Side Effexor".

"The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more."

FigDoggie - I went off prozac for PMS a few months ago, and for the first time since I'm remembering why I started it in the first place. I am in a *foul* mood today!

Your doc's "side effexor" made me laugh out loud! Thanks for that!!

I'm still laughing :D
