Effects of Alcohol...

As some of you well know, i've been having problems with the need to pee for many months now, with no avail. However, i have noticed that whenever i drink, probably too much, i the next day the need to pee is much less intense, almost "normal". Why is that? Is it because alcohol relaxs me, so that i'm not as stressed? As my pee thing is probably a stress thing. Or could it be something else, whatever it is, it makes the world of difference. So, any thoughts? Other than becoming a alcoholic!

Thank you for your time.

Sometimes alcohol will decrease the sensation to your bladder (among other things), so you don't feel the urge to urinate, even when your bladder is full. I know you know this ... but the RN in me has to say it. Alcohol is NOT the answer to this ... or to anything!! LOL!! Okay ... I've "yelled" at you, so I'll stop now!! I hope you know I simply care about you and don't want to see you hurt yourself.

I didn't know it decreased the sensation to the bladder. I just find it odd, that when i drink alcohol, the urge to go (the next day) is soooooo much better. Odd...

Oh Wayne....I hope you are not going to trun into a alcoholic!:) There are alot of other ways you can deal with your peeing problem.}(

Thank you for the article. I just find it wierd that when i drink (not that often by the way) that it stops the pain i get. I think its more to do with the fact that when i have alcohol in me, my body (meaning me) is more relaxed. Making me less stressed.

bfj - the website is great!!! If I could just get my husband to look it over but he'll say he doesn't have time. There are quite a few symptoms I recognize my dh has but he thinks he is perfect.:-(

I am certainly no authority, but my first thought when I read that the alcohol makes your need to urinate less is that alcohol is very dehydrating, therefore you would tend to go less.

You think maybe this has anything to do with it?

No, the thing is, the next day i drink, probably twice as much, and yet need to go so much less. Why oh why oh why...?

Wayne, Jeanne Marie, and anyone else who is interested, alcohol acts as a pain killer, and decreases our sensitivity to signals from smooth muscle, which is what our bladders are made of. It's also a diuretic, so yes we can become dehydrated while drinking it. But dehydration can also occur at the cellular level, not just because we've urinated a lot. Whatever the physiological explanation, it's not the answer.

Wayne..too though, if you are dehydrated already and drink lots of water, you will still excrete less in that your body is absorbing it to make up for the deficit. It does not suprise me at all why the urge is significantly decreased the day after drinking. Why would you be relaxed the DAY AFTER? Isn't that more like, HUNGOVER??

Interesting fact about the signals and smooth muscle.

And, let's really think about how dehydrated we really are after a night of drinking...you drink all night, come home and either pass out or go to bed and wake up 8-10 hours later and THEN maybe you'll drink some water. Coffee for most of us which will just make the already horribly bad condition worse! Nighttime is dehydrating for anyone, even without drinking the night before....

Wayne, I'm concerned that your worrying about the peeing is causing a vicious cycle: you worry, it makes you pee, you pee a lot, it makes you worry, etc. I had a "nervous peeing" episode that lasted a week or so (and I tend to have to pee a lot, especially when I'm nervous). I think it got worse the more I thought about it. Maybe some yoga or meditation or some other stress-reduction program would help? Accupressure?

Thanks people. Wanna know something really odd...now please, let me say this and know that i rarely drink, hardly ever...but on Saturday night it was a party, i drank, 3 jake daniels and coke, 5 shots and then 2 pints. I never ever get a hangover. Not ever had one. I never feel drunk or even tipsy. Never. But the next day i feel very relaxed and less up tight. I know none of this makes sense, but its the truth. I never get drunk, or never have, and i dont get hangovers, headaches, etc...

Wayne, I'd get on an anti-anxiety medicine before using alcohol for relaxation. People who can put away large amounts of alcohol without seeming affected, are prime canditates for an alcohol problem. Even if you don't drink frequently, the amount of alcohol you consumed gets you the tag of a binge drinker. Alcohol's diuertic effect is one of the reasons people who drink too much experience that pounding head and feel hungover. Do be careful!
