With medical technology as advanced as it is, why hasn't someone discovered a pill that will keep the hormone(that causes carb cravings) levels stable so we don't have those cravings and ultimately get into the vicious cycle of craving causing more craving?

I'm trying a low carb/higher protein lifestyle change, and I'm struggling with the carb cravings. If I could make it past a few days I think I'd make it. I just need that pill to get me through those first days.

Any offered help/advice would be great.

Hi RhiannonW, I also struggled -- H-A-R-D -- when I did the same lifestyle change. I found that doing it cold turkey only led to a lot of frustration on my part, so I did it slowly. My first act was to make the switch to whole wheat bread and have only a slice per meal. Then I cut down on the cookies and chips and substituted apples and grapes. After that I cut down on the rice and pasta and started steaming vegetables for dinner. It wasn't a clean, straightforward change. But given time and some willpower, I was able to kick the carb habit. Now, when I feel sluggish and I know my body is needing some carbs, I fill up on fruit. Or I eat a Zone or Balance bar. Designer Whey bars are also good. Oh yes, I still get tempted. But when I think of all the hours I've spent working out, I'm able to push away the craving. Hope this helps.

Rhiannon, I'm not a pharmacist, but I am an RN. Carb cravings do eventually lessen, but it takes most people a few days to a few weeks to feel it. I commend you for trying to cut back on them, but please remember complex carbs are okay, and they are your body's primary source of available fuel. You don't need a pill. Just make sure to eat plenty of protein, and (believe it or not!) a little fat. Those two things stay with you longer, taking longer to digest, and will actually help you stave off the carb cravings. Best of luck to you!!
