Eat Well, Lose Weight While Breastfeeding

I have the above book by Eileen Behan, and I was wondering if anyone else has used it to help them loose wight while breastfeeding? If not I was wondering what are some of the guide lines other moms have used for weight loss while breastfeeding. I am wondering about the number of calories you took in and the amount of weight that is safe to loose without risk to milk production. I just want some kind of plan now that I have just 4 weeks left with pregnecy #4.
Thanks<><

Hi,

I don't have the book you're talking about, but I wanted to chime in with my experiences anyway :). I had a baby boy in January and I'm breastfeeding; I was active throughout my pregnancy and I gained about 36 lbs. I still have about 10 lbs. to lose (mostly due to breastfeeding, I think). I have the book Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell After Pregnancy by Debra Waterhouse and she gives really sound advice that I've found to be true: don't diet, just eat healthily and exercise. The weight should come off by itself. It has for me, albeit slowly, but I have to say that I feel really good about my body right now, even with the extra 10 lbs. I'm carrying around. I don't know if this is your first child or not (I also have a 4 y.o. daughter) but if it is, you should know that you'll probably need a few weeks before you start exercising again, and once you do you should really listen to your body. It will tell you when you need to back off some or if you need to eat a little more. Again, this is only my personal experience. I believe that if you're determined to be healthy and you're active, you'll lose the weight and get back to your former fit self in a reasonable amount of time.

BTW, congratulations! I really enjoyed my pregnancy this time around and I'm enjoying my son so much right now. Breastfeeding has totally been worth it and I wish you all the best.

I just wanted to say I agree with Randi. I gained 45 lbs. with my first and 50 with my second and the weight came off slowly but surely and I know it was because I nursed. I ate what ever I wanted (some things I had to stay away from because it changed the flavor of my milk too much or would give my baby gas). Also, another really good book to read is "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding". Breastfeeding is so great not only for your baby but for mom. Try to stick with it as long as you can.

I'm breastfeeding my 6th (born the end of November) and my weight is coming off ever so slowly. It's discouraging at times, but I just read Debra Waterhouse's book too and it's helping me accept it better. I found that with my last two, the weight came off much slower while breastfeeding than before, then as soon as I stopped breastfeeding (usually around 1 year) those last pounds came off. Goes right along with what Debra says about the body needing fat stores for breastfeeding, subsequent pregnancies and getting older (I'm 38 now). -- Renee
