Eat more and lose weight?

SRP

Cathlete
I've seen this concept posted somewhere before - that if you increase your calories - or maybe it's protein??? I can't remember - that you can lose weight.

If I'm not dreaming that I saw this, can someone explain it to me?

Hi shannon,

I'm not an expert so I'll just say that I have read/heard that one of the most common reasons women have trouble losing weight it because they eat too little, sending their body into starvation mood wherein the body "panics" and hangs on to all the fat and weight it can in defense. Don't know if that is what you are looking for but HIH!

"Eat more" and "increase your calories" aren't necessarily the same thing.

"Eat more" can mean choosing nutritent-dense, lower calorie foods. If you look at a book like 'Picture Perfect Weight Loss," it shows side-by-side comparisons of two meals or snacks that have the same amount of calories. One option is a rather small portion. The other is sometimes so huge you couldn't imagine eating it all at once (focusing a lot of veggies and fruits).

Some people who are not eatiing enough calories, and have slowed down their metabolisms, can turn the metabolism up by eating more calories.

Hi Shannon!

No expert here either but I've found I lose the most weight when I eat more. What worked really well for me was to eat about 1600 calories per day broken up roughly equally into 6 meals a day. I usually had a decent amount of protein every other meal and more carbs on the meals in between.

Sample:
1. Scrambled egg whites, slice of ww toast with a teaspoon of PB
2. Piece of fruit and ff yogurt
3. Bean burrito on ww tortilla, ff cheese
4. Vegetarian sausage patty with a slice of ff cheddar on a Weight Watchers English muffin
5. Lots o' veggies (asparagus, sweet potato, etc.) and a protein shake.
6. Protein shake

Hi all -
Thanks for the quick responses.

I'm mostly an ovo-lacto vegetarian, but every once in a while I'll eat a little salmon or tuna. I really like whole grain-based dishes with lots of veggies. I honestly don't think I'm in a starvation mode, and I know I don't look like I am...

A typical day might go something like this:
Breakfast: two slices of PB toast (with too much PB, but I'm trying to cut back) or yogurt and fruit. 8 oz orange juice.

Lunch: usually leftovers from dinner the night before, plus some fruit.

Dinner: revolves around either a grain or potato dish with vegetables. Occasionally I'll do pasta. I don't like heavy sauces. I make my own tomato sauce or will stir in a little olive oil and herbs. I love cheese and usually throw plenty of that in. Also have a slice of homemade wheat bread.

I rarely have dessert, but when I do, watch out!

I recently tried to estimate calories but wasn't incredibly accurate about it since I didn't have access to how many are in an apple, for example. My estimates came to an average of 1500 or 1600 per day, I think.

From what you all say, that should be plenty - I sure would hate to eat more and then gain weight! My personal view is that I'm on the high nutrient end ... any comments?

Right, you hear eat more times a day, as in just smaller meals, lose weight. I have already found out that when I up my calories I gain weight, and I don't want to do that. So I know what works for me.... Rhonda:)

Zig-zag! Eat the cals you need to maintain your current weight for 1 day and then create a deficit for the next 3 days and repeat! This is working wonders for me! I am eating more as a result and losing the weight! :)

Excellent advice! I was shocked to see how much I was eating, and you can't imagine how much peanut butter fat increased the fat and calories! Try it, think you will be surprised.
