Dyson vaccuum cleaners

I really want to get a new vaccuum cleaner as I absolutely HATE the Kirby that DH has had for over 15 years!! So much so, that I refuse to vaccuum with it! (Maybe that's not such a bad idea!) I have been looking at the Dyson, especially the one for pet hair, as I have 3 cats. Anyway, does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Hello,

When I was choosing a vacuum cleaner for my home, I wanted a Dyson. I read reports and had feedback from other people that Dysons are powerful vacuum cleaners but they don't last very long. I also read that they do not last very long - average is 2 years.

I don't like the look of Dysons, they are big, bulky and quite heavy and not easy for cleaning stairs. If you have two floors then dragging the machine up and down stairs is cumbersome.

The best vacuum cleaners are Miele or Bosch. They come up trumps all the time in the Which (a UK consumer magazine) test of products. I bought a Miele which is guaranteed for 10 years and it's light, quite and does a brilliant job. Miele comes in a few models including one for pet hairs.

Miele are still bagged cleaners unlike a Dyson which is bagless. I've had bagless vacuums before as well and I thought emptying the holder is a messy business because you have to empty the contents into something and then wash the holder. With a bag, you just remove and put it in the dustbin.

Dysons can be more expensive and for that price to last only a few years is a rip-off.

I say buy a Miele model and you will never regret it.

Amy,

After two years of procrastination, I finally bought a Dyson. I love it, especially because it has cut my vacuuming time in half.

I did a lot of research so let me share something with you. The differences in the Dyson are down to a couple of things. First, you can either get the regular push or "the ball". The only difference after that is the attachments. For example, the Animal is the same as the All Floors with a couple of exceptions, the color and the attachments it comes with. Of course, because the Animal comes with more attachments, the cost is highter. Make sure you review the attachments to be sure you are not wasting money on tools you may not use. It took me awhile to figure this out as I thought there may be some difference in the strength of the vacuum.

I have two dogs that shed almost constantly. This vacuum is absolutely brilliant in picking up dog hair.

P.S. I just read the post prior to mine. I have to rebut the comment about the Dyson bagless. It is the cleanest to empty that I've ever used and I've had two bagless before my Dyson. I also just hate to have to remember to buy more bags. It also holds more dirt and dog hair than my others did. I do agree that the Dyson is heavy but I guess for me that's okay because I lift weights anyway :+ .

Thanks for the responses. I know that my in-laws have had their Dyson for almost 4 years and LOVE it. My FIL uses is almost everyday!

Candi- I was looking at the animal and the attachements is what's making it so attractive! As of now, we are having to lift a 60lb Kirby up onto the sofa and chairs to vaccuum the pet hair off them! That little turbine attachment would be heaven! I don't mind the weight of the vaccuum, as long as it's lighter than our freakin' Kirby!!!

I have also had a bagless (cyclone one, terrible!) vaccuum and I loved not having to deal with the bags. A co-worker also just got a Dyson and couldn't believe the amount of junk she was sucking up! She said that she was emptying after every room and had a hard time thinking about the weeks that went by between emptying the bags!

I did a bunch of research and bought my mom a Dyson. She seems to love it.

When my mom was away on a trip, I cleaned her place many times. She has a carpet and it sucked up stuff pretty well and was easy to move around.

What I don't like about the Dyson is :

1) Now maybe I was sleepy at the time, but putting together that dang thing was no easy puzzle. I was sure I was going to break something trying to figure out what part slides into where to make the contraption, and I couldn't find any markings to tell me which side is up and down.

2) Now maybe I was sleepy EVERY time I did this, but ;) each time I finished vacuuming and wanted to dump the dust bunnies and muck into the garbage can, I ended up pushing the wrong part and dumping all the crud onto the carpet LMAO. Unfortunately I'm not joking.

But it did suck up that mess very well, too. ;)

Funny, August!

One of the reasons I procrastinated in buying the Dyson is because I thought it looked to complicated. It isn't really, though. It took me a couple of weeks to get the hang of it but now I'm an expert. I bought "the ball" which is a lot of fun to move around furniture :)

P.S. To empty, push the red sliding lever up while holding over the trash bin :)

I must have vacuumed a day short of a couple weeks or somethin. ;)

Thank goodness Mom is back and vacuuming her place with her Dyson on her own. Having that muck fall back onto the carpet EACH time I did it was like a bad one-man 3 Stooges skit.

I have the Dyson Animal and it is the best!! I have 4 cats and 2 birds and it picks up everything!! It is also very quiet compared to our last vacumn cleaner. I love it and wont buy anything else.

The original Dyson plant is located 10 miles from my home. I have owned one and bought my parents one. I didn't like it - lasted about 2 yrs and after that it lost suction. The parts also began to fall off of it. My parents, who have 6 pets, love it. But, it's starting to fall apart for them too. I honestly would look at alternatives because I think you can find better for cheaper. Like many european products it has a really cool design and works well for a short period of time - but they make 'em cheap so you buy them more frequently. It's just modern looking and was innovative when they came out about 10 yrs ago - but not any longer. I now own a Henry (not sure if they sell them in the US) and love it.

Well, I don't call $500 cheap so this thing better last longer than that!

I think the warranty is two years so that would make sense x(

oh I didn't mean cheap as in expensive...I was refering to the quality of the product...I think that Dysons are cheaply made from a quality standpoint:) They are most definetely expensive!!

mta: I don't think that Miele and Bosch vacuums are available to buy in the US in reference to the first post in this thread. But, I agree that they are good products.

I have seen Miele on various websites but I had never heard of them before. Bosch is supposed to be a very good company from what I hear.

Thanks for the input. DH found some website that you can compare all the attachments and stuff. One thing I noticed was that they are coming with 5 yr warranties now.

I went to a vacuum repair shop and gave them the models I was interested in . . . and asked them which they had come into the shop for repair the most. They laughed and said hands down Dysons (all models). I had Miele on there as I had heard nothing but good things and the people at the repair shop confirmed that these are the Ferrari of vacuums. So Miele it is for me. They have them on amazon.com if you want to see the different models and read some reviews.

I have a Dyson. It's a GREAT machine, and does everything it's reputed to do, BUT... that thing is heavy! It will make you thankful you work out, seriously!

I LOVE mine! I've had it for 6 months and it is WONDERFUL! The pet attachments work great at getting the cat/dog hair.

Also, it may feel heavy to some BUT it is MUCH lighter than my horrible old Hoover!

Enjoy!

Terri

Have you checked out Consumer Reports? They don't list my vacuum (I wonder what that means;( --lol!), but Sears and Electrolux upright models have the top 4 spots in their ratings. As for repair records, Kirby leads the pack with the best repair history, and canister models seem to need the most repairs. HTH:)

ETA the Dyson Animal is the highest rated Dyson vacuum, ranked squarely in the middle with an excelllent rating for bare floors and emissions and good ratings for cleaning carpeted floors, tools, etc.

The other Dyson models are rated rather poorly with lots of black dots;)

CR makes no mention of the Dyson repair history.

I have a Dyson also. I absolutely love it. The attachment for furniture gets cat hair out like nothing i've ever used. I read somewhere in a post before mine about a 2 year warranty - Dyson started giving their vaccuum cleaner a 5 year warranty. Good luck to you. It took a long time for me to finally decide that this was the one!
