Dry hair-- help!

My hair is driving me nuts!!!! It doesn't seem to matter if I keep it short or long, let it dry naturally or blow it dry, it is dry and breaks really easily. It's very fine, and I'm careful to use a wide-toothed comb rather than a brush, but it still breaks. I've tried not washing it daily, but it is noticeably oily and flat.

I had a reception to go to last night and my hair just looked awful. It was frizzing everywhere and felt like straw on the ends. On Saturday, I have to go sit on a stage in front of 300 people-- any quick fixes?!!!! I use Garnier (sp?) for shampoo/conditioner right now, plus their leave in conditioner. No color or perms currently, either.

first thing that comes to mind is how often do you get it cut? Routine trims are great for keeping dry, brittle hair at bay. You could also do deep conditioning treatments weekly. I love the Bumble & Bumble line for that. Also, I have dry, frizzy hair (very thick though) and swear by Frizzease Secret Weapon.

I would suggest a clarifying shampoo for your type of hair. For styling, Redken has a great anti-frizz balm called "Align". I swear by it! It doesn't weigh it down or leave it greasy.
 
I agree Redken "Align" is WONDERFUL!! I have very curley hair, and straighten it DAILY with a hot iron. Also, Silicone or "anti Frizz" for your hair works wonders, however, make sure its a formula that does not make hair oily. I live in Colorado so I'm in high altitude, so even when there is humidity its quite "dry" here, and with all I do to my hair... YIKES... I use Pantine treatment conditioners almost daily.
 
Hi Kim, are you talking about Secret Weapon? I use about a half a dime shaped worth on the different areas that are most frizzy. It works like a charm!

Debbie I'm not sure what it was called. It was a little bottle of anti-frizz serum. I used it about 6 yrs ago. So I am not sure what it was. But I think I will try it again. You said it is the secret weapon? I probably used too much.

Kim, I use the serum as well. That's just called Frizzease. I put that in my hair while still wet. I use the Secret Weapon (like a cream) once my hair is dry. It's like magic :)

Cool, I will have to try that! And I have some thick hair. It doesn't help that it is long and colored. Great combinations huh? I am going to get some today.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I'll start with the Frizzease because I know I can get that in town. Does it start to help right away?

'Course after posting this question, now I'm thinking about cutting my hair really short. Sigh. I used to keep it that way, but my husband tends to like it long. I'm anticipating the bickering that will occur if I cut it; if I do, I think I'll just meet him at the door with a heavy frying pan and dare him to say anything:) After over a year with Cathe, I know he can't outrun me!

I wanted to add a couple products that I've had luck with:

Redken has a "so soft" line and there are 2 products that I've had luck with: "addictive hair transformer" and "heavy cream"

Bumble and Bumble has a good defrizz and also a cream called brilliantine.

Just wondering.....what happens to your hair when you straight iron it? I know it's really hard on your hair but I find, on special occasions, it helps with texture and appears really soft.

You should deep condition every week. Get yourself a heat cap or bonnet dryer & some intense conditioner (Ojon is my current favorite). Deep condition with heat for about 30 minutes, at least once a week.

My favorite styling product for frizzies is Phytospecific Beauty Styling Creme. It's pricy but it lasts forever & is really awesome.

I use a ceramic straightener (not cheap about $50) which is easier on your hair than the cheaper non ceramic straighteners. I usually don't use anything product wise on my hair before I straighten it... After I use the iron I put "frizzease" or some other "silicone" product to seal the ends, and make it shiney. ( I don't have to do this, but I like the way it looks after I use the serums, and I think It does protect it slightly from further damage)
I don't think I have any more split ends or damage than the average person, due to straightening, because I use a high quality straightener, I also deep condition my hair at least 3 times a week.
