Downloading music from the internet

I tried Itunes but it apparently still doesn't work with MP3 players. I am looking for a service that charges by the song without an additional monthly fee. Does any know of a good service to download music to an MP3 player? Thanks.

Nancy, have you tried going to walmart.com. Theirs are .88 cents per song. I haven't personally used it, but my SIL has. I use musicmatch.com but I think you have to have the software program to load it. I have a Dell MPS player.

We use iTunes and it works great with our mp3 players. My daughter has a little mp3 player that we got at Costco and then we have 3 iPods. They all work fine. However...if I'm remembering correctly, the ones on my daughter's mp3 player....we might convert the songs that we bought from the iTunes website into mp3 format since they are AAC when you download them.
Also, do you import your CDs onto your computer in MP3 format? This would involve an extra step but you can buy songs on iTunes, burn a disk, then reimport in MP3.
Good luck!)
Amy- who LOVES her iPod.)

Amy,
After buying a song on Itunes I discovered that it was not in MP3 format and my DH, a computer engineer, has been looking for conversion software. I don't know what it means to import a CD. I just want to download songs onto my MP3 player, but it's clear that Itunes isn't going to let me do it.

Just curious: what do you do with your Ipods? I only need portable music for exercising, and my research indicated that Ipods are not a good choice for exercising. Otherwise, I would have purchased one. I guess they're good if you have a family and everyone is trying to listen to different music? Or if you travel a lot?

I have an iPod mini and I use it for exercising all the time! I have a little armband or sometimes I just clip it onto my shorts. It works perfectly and it holds a LOT of music- like 1100 songs.
I use TOAST for conversion, I think. My husband and I own a DVD company so we have every kind of equipment available to work with audio and video.
What do I do with my mini iPod? :D Let me tell you! I use it in the car for all my car music- it will broadcast a signal to my radio and play over the car system and thus we have no need for CDs in the car. I use it to exercise. I also listen to the Bible and other audio books when I clean the kitchen- which I do way more than I wish I did!!! However, listening to books on my iPod makes the boring stuff go by so much faster. I also use it when I do laundry- not getting enough time logged here, but when I do...its better w/ an iPod ). My husband has one also and he uses his the same way, however we have different taste in music so that is one thing I love about it- it is MINE! :) MY songs, MY books, etc.
The other iPod is new and is my teenage daughters. She was beginning to take over mine with her songs. We wouldn't have gotten her one except that she WILL exercise with it and otherwise, she is on the couch. So, we thought it would be worth the investment if it gets her up and moving. She is allowed to ride her bike in the neighborhood with it if she keeps the volume down to half and keeps on ear free to hear the rare neighborhood car driving past. So for the 3 of us, yes we all like different music, but in the car, we take turns broadcasting each other's taste in music.
One thing for sure, my 4 mile run gets done a LOT faster with my running music on!! :)

One more thing about iPods- they have quite a bit of room so you don't feel the need to compress your songs, so they sound better. W/ my daughter's old player, it had something like 256 mb of room, so maybe one album? OR you can compress your songs down to get more on there but it ruins the sound. With the iPod, (even the mini) has 4 GB so there is room for your 1100 favorite songs played at a 196kbs or AAC which is also a good format. LOVE IT!!! My husband's iPod is currently holding 13,000 songs on it! He has a 30 GB iPod, but he needs it for work and I wanted a cute one that does well clipped onto an armband.

Hi Nancy!

You can only use iTunes downloaded music on an iPod (and probably through your computer). I use MusicMatch also, and have downloaded tunes from them; however, it's not compatible with my very old Intel mp3 player. I plan to buy a Dell mp3 player, as that is what MusicMatch is compatible with. iTunes also has a dirty little secret in that you must spend over $100 to replace the battery when it runs out. Some guy was VERY upset that he didn't know this when he shelled out the bucks for it, and did a homemade video that found its way around the internet. (they may have since lowered the price on the battaery because of this). Anyhow, I've been very happy with MusicMatch. I do pay the fee to listen to their music database (it's how I listen to the "radio" now. I just cannot STAND any of the NYC DJ's!) You may be able to just download the tunes for .99 without getting into the subscription.

Happy New Year! :D

Happy New Year, Nancy-
You'll have to pardon my little rebuttal here- I just LOVE Macs and iPods and iTunes, so consider this if you wish.
We've had our iPod's since they first came out. DH has had his for ?? 3 years maybe?? We have not needed to replace a battery. They are rechargeable and should last a very long time like ours. Also, mine is under a 3 year warranty and we've had extensive experience with Apple and applecare and have not had problems with their customer service. I think we have 12 apple computers in our home and probably 20 at our business. The "dirty little secret" would not have anything to do with iTunes (which is the music downloading service). But it could possibly cost a lot to replace a battery in an iPod.

As for iTunes and iPods- I use music from my old CDs on my iPod, music from iTunes on my iPod, and music from my computer on my iPod. I can burn CDs from anything that I buy at the iTunes store and enjoy it anywhere that I would play a CD. In my experience, I've found it to be extremely versatile and anything that plays on my computer, plays on my iPod. ANY mp3 can be put on your iPod and we do it all the time. I've purchased from walmart.com and placed them on my iPod and also sometimes my sister emails me little songs in mp3 and they can very easily be placed on the iPod, too.

I just upgraded my 256MB mp3 player to 40G for Christmas! I'm in heaven! I listen to audiobooks all the time and now I can have all sorts of music as well as my books on the thing.

I've been using dBpowerAmp music converter for a long time and I love it. It's a free download and you can convert sound files to wav or mp3 and you can also pick what bitrate you want. Here is the dbpowerAMP site: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm and here is the free download from CNET: http://www.download.com/dBpowerAmp-...534.html?part=dl-dBpowerAm&subj=dl&tag=button

Hi Nancy, I agree with the others on Musicmatch. I have a dell mp3 player and it works great. I even have a subscription to musicmatch to listen to music or the radio which I do alot so for me it is worth it. The musicmatch software is free so there is no need to pay a subscription to download music. I just paid to listen to any music I want the full length of it. You do have to download the software at www.musicmatch.com

Nancy,
I subscribe to Limewire. It cost $24 for 2 years unlimited downloads. The quality of the songs I've downloaded is pretty good and I burn CDs from these. I tried a "free" download service my teenage nephew uses and it wasn't that good--too slow to download, and it was hard to find songs.
Hope this helps!
Lisa

Just to clarify my earlier post: Yes, I was referring to replacing the battery on the iPod, which has nothing to do with iTunes. I could not download music from iTunes and then copy it on to a Dell or Intel mp3 player. You can only download iTunes to an iPod mp3 player. I could download iTunes to my computer and burn them to CD, but I can't put them on my mp3 player, which is what I would want to do with any music I purchase. I take the mp3 player with me on business trips to use in the hotel gym, and for listening to music to and from work on the subway.

I was not saying that the iPod is not an excellent device, just saying that the music you download from iTunes cannot be copied to any old mp3 player.
