So I am extremely limited in my understanding of tech. Please be patient with me. I am buying more downloads and have been using a Macbook Air. I would like to do my workouts from a larger screen. So my question is, do I need to buy a smart tv in order to watch my downloads? Do I need to buy the apple tv box? I would like to save the downloads in multiple place as well as do the workouts from a tv. Any information that you can share would be helpful.

Whatever your TV is smart or not, it probably has a USB slot? In that case all you need is a USB flash/drive, to storage your downloaded videos on, the larger the better (they are not expensive nowadays!). Connect the USB drive to the TV's slot and select viewing throught the USB!.
Another good solution, proposed already here in case you have a non-smart TV is to connect your tablet to the TV via an HMDI cable.
As Debinmi pointed out, you need to convert your videos, stored on DVDs from the old, mostly obsolete, AVI format to, for example MP4. There are a lot of free software that can be used and probably Mac as well as Windows include apps supporting that.
