Oh, my gosh, Debinmi, I had no idea there was a bankruptcy. Clearly, I knew about transitioning out of DVDs as well as the fitness equipment; however, I was unaware of the bankruptcy.

This is wonderful news! Cathe can breathe a little easier. Fingers crossed the negotiations will end soon and she will be back operating freely and doing what she does best: keeping us all huffing and puffing and guessing what the next series will be. Hi rep strength training???

I shall leave cathe and partner take the business decision to bounce back properly. Hopefully that decision will shut any exxx, speculative mouth. High rep series/pack???? Is it the best health choice as far as the over 60 customer segment is concerned? Is it profitable for cathedotcom?

I just want Cathe to be done with the legal stuff and come out of it with her business intact. Her workouts and fitness in general are incredibly valuable which is not reflected in real life $$. So many great instructors faded away and were never able to make a living with fitness. I hope Cathe remains the exception. Sending as many positive thoughts her way! Until the legal stuff is done, she can't do anything freely, not even communicate with us. Her lawyers would have put a gag order in place as soon as the legal proceedings started. Not easy. But we're here for when it's all done.

A hi rep set is perfect for the over 60 crowd and the under 60 crowd too. As we get older and stop making enough taurine, our mitochondria stop being able to use fat efficiently. They shrink and atrophy. Our bodies start relying more on glucose for energy. We end up losing muscle mass and gaining fat that we can't easily get rid of because we can't turn it into energy without enough mitochondria. The mitochondria is also responsible for the synthesis of a significant portion of the amino acid proline which is needed for collagen synthesis/repair.

The only way to reverse mitochondrial aging is with hi rep aerobic endurance work (not anaerobic endurance) plus getting from our food all the conditionally essential amino acids like taurine and glycine.

If there is one person that can make hi rep work less boring and possibly even exciting, it's Cathe. Could I sell hi rep any harder?

@Soapmaker
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the importance of mitonchondria. Have you got any journal, paper confirming your statement. Aging through perimenopause and menopause cause more issue than just dealing with lack of efficiency in mitochondria. Training just endurance is not going to solve the problem of aging population. I hope more study come up. That said, Cathe can sell not just endurance workout. She has already sold many endurance through dvds and lives.

I believe Cathe will ask for suggestions at some point and I can tell you already that my suggestion is not going to be an endurance series. There are way too many of them in the collection. RwH 2 is what I would like to add.

Will do. We really need to write reviews for the live workouts. The ones I bought are: 273, 348, 366, 399, 498, 499, 529, 549, 579, 581, 594, 599, and 601.

I own ~100 Live workouts, ~200 GB of data. I've been buying a few every year since Live started. I also bought the DVD/downloads combo pre-orders. I just checked for a backup SSD hard drive on Amazon and was shocked by the prices. A hard drive I bought in 2019 for ~$60 is now over $150. I think prices for hard drive will continue to go up. That's something to plan for if you're considering buying downloads.
Good idea for writing reviews for the Live workouts.

Menopause gets blamed for a lot of things that it doesn't contribute much to including a lot of weight gain, bone loss and whatever else is popular today or pharmaceutical companies have a test and a pill for. The reality is much more complicated and much more nuanced.

This link will take you to a paper that describes the decline in aerobic capacity in people from their 20's to 80's. The study is relevant because it followed the same individuals for an average of 8+ years and included 100's of healthy individuals. You don't need to read it but look at figure 1. It shows the decline in aerobic capacity over the decades. That decline accelerates between age 40 and 60 in both men and women, at the same time as menopause in women. Aerobic decline is precipitated by nutritional deficiencies which make many non essential nutrients become nutritionally essential. The only way to reverse it is a combination of aerobic exercise and supplementation through food or pills. It's also the way to reverse long covid.

I stopped short of posting the info in the Stacy Sims (Next Level book) thread because I didn't want to start a controversy. The reference in that book was selected to make it look like menopause is the "cause" of aerobic decline when an experienced scientist like her should have figured out that the paper was not valid. But it fits the narrative that menopause is "The Problem" and the solution is to do heavy weight training and eat a lot of protein (debunked by aging studies).

If I were to post the graph for the taurine levels in the blood in a similar population, it will look very similar to figure 1 but with a much steeper decline. Taurine is one critical nutrient for mitochondria. Without it, it cannot make its proteins. It shrinks and atrophies. If you want to read about mitochondria, a book by Ray Griffiths called "Mitochondria in Health and Disease" gives a good description of how mitochondria works and why it is the most important element in health and aging.

By aerobic endurance, I don't mean using 2 and 3 lb weights to do a few reps. I use 5 to 15 lb weights for hi rep work (in the 100 rep range). The challenge is making it less boring so you do all the reps with good form and get the right signal to the muscles. That's the kind of workout I want at this point. I'll still do the heavy weights for fun but I want more from my weight workouts.

A New Chapter for Four Seasons Fitness
❤️

We have some very important and exciting news to share with our Four Seasons Fitness family.
After a great deal of hard work and many conversations, we have reached an agreement with W.O.L.F. Gyms to acquire Four Seasons Fitness on or about September 30, 2026.
We know that change can bring a lot of questions, but we want to share something we believe is especially important:
The community spirit that has made Four Seasons Fitness special will continue!
Like us, W.O.L.F Gyms has a strong tradition of being a community-focused gym, and they understand that a great fitness facility is about much more than equipment and workouts. It's about the people, the friendships, the familiar faces, and the welcoming atmosphere that make you feel like you're part of something.
We are also excited about the future because W.O.L.F has some exciting improvements and renovations planned for the facility. We think there are some great things ahead, and we'll be sharing more details with you as plans develop.
Most importantly, we want to thank all of you for your support, loyalty, encouragement, and friendship over the years. Four Seasons Fitness has been part of this community for more than four decades, and that simply would not have been possible without you.
So many of you generously donated to our GoFundMe campaign in an effort to save our facility, and we want you to know that we have initiated a refund of all of your donations. Although we didn’t raise enough to continue operating as Four Seasons Fitness, the campaign did bring about enough attention for us to get this new opportunity to keep the doors open for all of you. You should see your refund within the next 3 to 10 business days. Thank you so much for your generosity and for caring so much about Four Seasons!
There is still a lot to do between now and the transition, but we're excited to be able to finally share this news with you.
A new chapter is beginning—and we believe it's going to be a very exciting one.
❤️

Stay tuned for more details!

Before we get deep into the discussion, let put things into context. Mitochondria/ATP is a source of energy used during exercice. Before thinking and discussing what it does to fat, I would like to agree on what it actually mean, establish it's role when we exercise. The process of exercising is not just about shedding fat storage.:);) To me and many it is not just about getting rid of fat storage.

What is the main function of mitochondria?

Known as the “powerhouses of the cell,” mitochondria produce the energy necessary for the cell's survival and functioning. Through a series of chemical reactions, mitochondria break down glucose into an energy molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is used to fuel various other cellular processes.

Regardless of age our body uses 2 types of fuel/energy, ATP and glycogen. Our body can not use fat (mainly stored) all the time while exercising, it needs to switch to glycogen, consumed --- Carbohydrate after a brief time exercising. Not that long. Now, depending on the type of intensity produced while exercising, we can use up glycogen.

Now taurine is an amino acid --- Food consumption. I do not see any link between taurine and ATP ability to use fat efficiently. That being said, muscle mass through body composition help in improving metabolism. It is a fact. This happen regardless of the age. All it require is to build muscle and maintain. should it be through high or low rep and heavy, moderate and light load in YOUR opinion and ability.

Now your study talk about a decline of aerobic capacity aka VO2 max in healthy older adults. I can not see any statement regarding "An elderly body not being efficient on using or burning fat during exercising. Nor have I read the same for rest period. It is stating a decline of VO2 max every decade, without being 100% accurate:rolleyes::rolleyes: Please correct me if I have missed something. This study does not mention the intensity. It would have been helpful if it mentioned low versus high intensity.

This study does not contain any indication about intensity to establish the type of energy used throughout the exercise. That is where your beloved mitochondria should come to light and eventually confirm your highlighted statement.:D BTW, mitochondria can get small but sadly we can't see it with out own humain eye but muscle can get really big --- joking!!:D:D;)

ATP/mitochondria is mainly energy used in the begining of short moment during low-moderate intensity. High intensity uses another energy source glycogen. That is what any human need for better body composition. I have not come across an over 40 woman who does not want a better body compositiion. One's vo2 max can slightly decline but if she/or he is strong holding a very good body composition through muscle mass, she or he can still burn fat. Mitochondria is not the sole requirement to burn fat or to maintain a solid metabolism. That is my understanding. In fact, gaining a better body composition through muscle mass is the best ever investment one's would make as far as HEALTH is concerned.

Here below is a recap of 2 different intensity, not impact!

Low-intensity cardio (LISS) uses a steady, easy pace for 45 to 60 minutes to burn fat and recover fast. High-intensity cardio (HIIT) uses short, hard bursts for 15 to 20 minutes to save time and boost fitness fast. Most people do best by mixing both. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Low-Intensity Cardio (LISS)
    • Pace: Easy movement where you can talk easily (50% to 65% max heart rate).
    • Examples: Fast walking, light cycling, or easy swimming.
    • Pros: Safe for joints, easy to recover from, and great for daily stress relief.
    • Cons: Takes a long time to complete each session. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

High-Intensity Cardio (HIIT)
    • Pace: Very hard effort followed by rest (80% to 95% max heart rate).
    • Examples: Sprinting, hard bike intervals, or jump rope circuits.
    • Pros:Saves time and builds high VO2 max (oxygen capacity
    • Cons: High risk of burnout or joint injury if done too often

    • #We shall not FEAR the intensity

Other Reasons High-Intensity Exercise Is Healthy for the Heart

Although you might think high-intensity interval training places more stress on the heart than exercising at a moderate intensity, that’s not necessarily the case. More cardiologists are recommending high-intensity interval training for people who have had a heart attack in the form of cardiac rehab after studies show this type of training is less stressful to the heart than long periods of moderate-intensity exercise. It also may be better for increasing aerobic capacity in people with stable cardiovascular disease. Of course, it’s a workout that heart patients should always do under supervision.

Another 8-week study in older adults found those who engaged in high-intensity interval training enjoyed greater health improvements, including larger gains in aerobic capacity and improved insulin sensitivity. Both of these are beneficial for heart health and for lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Here is an inspiring story. High rep is not the best because the aging process, we loose type 2 muscle fiber compared to type 1. it is the type of muscles fiber we need to focus on. Our body tend to become insuline resistant as we age. This type of muscle fiber help fight this resistance:rolleyes::rolleyes: --- No one want to build a pre or menopausal belly:rolleyes:

I'm not looking for fat loss. My interest is in healthspan.

I think you got help from AI which didn't exactly give you the right information. Wikipedia has more accurate, curated, up to date information.

We use 2 types of fuel, fat and glucose (carbohydrate in food, stored as glycogen in the body). Both are broken down in the mitochondria to generate the massive amounts of ATP that power everything we do. A healthy metabolism is able to switch between fat and glucose easily (metabolic flexibility). We lose the ability to switch as we get older, partially because of our food/eating patterns and partially because our mitochondria loses its ability to produce enough energy due to nutrient loss. We get locked into a glucose dependent metabolism which leads to chronic diseases like diabetes.

VO2 max is a measure of how well our mitochondria can generate ATP, hence the reference. Part of this number is determined genetically by the types and amount) of muscle fibers we are born with. The rest is determined by type of exercise we do, i.e. how we train the muscle fibers. The reference I gave shows a "normal" decline in VO2 max in healthy individuals as they got older. This is where taurine comes into the picture.

Taurine is an amino acid that we make quite a bit of when we're young. We also get it from food (like organ meats, oysters and seaweed). By age 60, we make about 20% of the amount of taurine we made in our 20's. That's too little. Taurine is needed to make tRNAs/proteins in the mitochondria. Without the mitochondrial encoded proteins, it can't make ATP efficiently. Not enough taurine equals not enough ATP. As a result, we start "slowing down" and we call it "getting older". That's the link between taurine and ATP production. Taurine also reduces oxidative damage in the mitochondria which also improves energy production. Here is a a paper that describes the role of taurine in healthy lifespan (science heavy, experimental evidence): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37289866/

Taurine has many other roles. I will add one more since most of us are worried about bone density. Taurine helps increase bone density partly by reducing calcium loss in urine.

I'm not saying taurine will solve all health issues. It's one molecule that we know contributes to health. There are probably many more that we don't know about yet.

I'm recommending this book by Kate Deering, Better Energy. It has solid information about how we make energy (ATP) and many of the things that could go wrong.

Returning to VO2 max and aerobic endurance: the only way to improve mitochondrial health is by doing aerobic endurance exercise. It includes hi rep weight lifting to train as many muscles aerobically as possible. It works best when coupled with proper nutrition including taurine rich food. Cathe has many weight workouts that focus on anaerobic endurance (10-12 reps). Those workouts will moderately increase mitochondrial density in muscle with a focus on generating energy from glucose (limited potential). She doesn't have many for aerobic endurance (unlimited potential). That's the set that I really want, especially now that she's incorporating functional movements in her weight lifting.
HTH. I'll try to write some more when I have more time.
