Thank you for sending the journals across. Our interaction is about discussing and eventually establishing if your statement above is relevant to the healthspan we are all after. I have highligthed what you are after because it is everyone's wish. We all want to be independant and active. One can pursuit fat loss as a short term goal but behind achieving the goal, he or she will gain the ability to perform 10 pull up for example. It is part of the process and in a long run she or he is looking after one's health. One can pursuit muscle size and "arguably" gain STRENGTH, power, agility and speed. Those are components over 50, 60 need to work on for a better healthspan. Those are anaerobic STRENGTH. Those are fast twith over 60 gradually loose while aging. If one does NOT recruit muscle, she or he loose it completely. The food --- Taurine without the work behind can not replace those fast twitches. later on in our life, we will need those twitches to react quickly, efficiently a safely.A hi rep set is perfect for the over 60 crowd and the under 60 crowd too. As we get older and stop making enough taurine, our mitochondria stop being able to use fat efficiently.
We need high rep pure cardio endurance, strength endurance and anaerobic strength too. Cathe has many many aerobic endurance. high- low, interval training such as 3 high step training, any step without blast etc..... In my opinion there are tons of them in cathe collection. What is truly missing is PURE strength for a rep range of 4 to 10. There are also many above 12 rep range.
Now "is high rep perfect for the over 60 crowd...." ? The answer is no. To some degree, we all need to train both high and low reps because there are benefits for both aerobic and anaerobics. Now you have highlighted the importance of mitochondria and how difficult it is to keep those energy cells act efficiently. Ok one of the strategy is to invest on fast twitch anerobics in both cardio and strength. Pro: They take less time and do not fatigue as long steady pace --- cardio/endurance. Because they are not as demanding in terms of fatigue, one won't pump too much on those mitochondria while performing zillions of high reps. We shall not forget that many 12, 16 reps of light weight is not strength. Take care for now
