DONATIONS FOR SANDY AND MR.T***

*****URGENT AND IMPORTANT!!!*****

Hey Everyone - important heads up here!!

Donna spoke with me today and said that as soon as the bill for Sandy and Mr. T (Toby) is satisfied, they legally are not allowed to collect donations anymore. If they did, she said someone could call it fraud.

What this means is, if you have sent a check in the mail, and it arrives after the bill is paid in full, they will return your check to you with a note.

This is sad in a way, because I had hoped for a credit, but I definitely want this to be above board all the way - I don't want anyone upset or anyone to get in trouble.

I will speak with an attorney soon about whether we can accept donations personally for the difference on our account even though we aren't a non profit organization (yet). If we can, I will update you on that later if you want to resubmit your contribution through that new avenue for the other rescues on our account.

But hey! Sandy can come home tonight! I'm really happy about that!

Lori :)

Thanks for letting us know, Lori. And please let us know if and when you are able to accept donations. I'd love to contribute to such a good cause! :)

Well, darn it! I just got on these boards to get the number of the vet and thought this was a new thread about it just because the other was so long. I will wait, then, but please let us know when you are able to take more. I don't understand that though - what kind of sense does that make? Certainly there has to be a way around that.

I was also going to say to you, because you are a little worried about people thinking you may be scamming them, that I am the one who brought up the idea of donations in the first place. I had no idea it would take off like this, but am very glad it did. You had no way of knowing I would suggest this when you first posted. I think most people don't even think that you are not legit, but I do understand your worry b/c for a large number of us, we do not even know each other except through the boards. I am just so glad that the little guys seem to be on the road to recovery, and God bless you for taking care of his little creatures. ^..^

Yeah, I'm bummed. We have a tab on our other bill that's around $1700 and I was looking forward to any spill over going to that so we could free up room for any new rescues that come in or medical treatment they might need.

There's two reasons I don't understand why this would be fraud. One, if you guys are sending checks with my personal account number on them, how would that be any different than if my father went down and said "I want to pay this bill in full" and wrote them a check? Would they refuse that too?

The second reason i don't understand it is, what if this little guy Sandy or Mr. T need additional treatment in the near future? Any excess collected could be used for that. If they turn it away, some people could actually be turned off and not give again. From a legal standpoint, I would think they'd be more likely to face a legal issue if they returned someone's check than if they took it.

<<<<sigh>>>>>>>....but....

I have a call into an attorney to hopefully speak with her this afternoon about whether i can take payments personally; if so, I will definitely set it up so that you can contribute through paypal. I would go ahead and tell people now to mail checks to me, but I want to make sure it's legal - and i don't know if I can take donations for the rescue efforts we do if I'm not an "organization." I'm sure there's lots of red tape to deal with there.

So please stay tuned...I will update you as I get information.

Good luck - hopefully you can find an attorney to get answers for you, and hopefully they will do it pro bono! I have incurred about $1600 in vet bills over the past week and a half, but happy to say Sampson is doing very well again. Prior to that, it was another about $500 in the past month, so I definitely know how vet bills can spiral up fast! :) Do keep us posted -

Shana,

I'm glad your Sampson is doing better - what happened to him? If I only had one or two, I'd invest in insurance for them...but I'd never have the funds for the number I have. I have about 10-20 outside and 11 inside....that isn't counting Sandy and Mr. T - or Chloe - a small female that some people brought me a few weeks ago when they were being evicted.

The inn is full. I may have to pitch a tent in the backyard to live in....
