Doggie musing/question

My lab is goofy and friendly and would never hurt anything.

My husband says, though, that if Heaven forbid, I would ever be placed in real danger while she was around, she would turn and defend me.

Can this be true? I can't imagine her ever being vicious. She's more of a "Hey, let me show you where they keep the jewels!" kind of dog.

Would even the friendliest dogs become enraged if their owners were in danger?

Just wondering.

I can't speak for all dogs, but my Aussie who is a big baby and loves everyone, has defended me. I think it would take a lot to get him to bite, but he puffs up like a blow fish and barks aggressively.

I think there's a major difference between the house being robbed (Tuck, the Aussie, would be more like your lab - "Let me show you..."), but when they sense real danger for their "pack" I think most dogs will defend. They sense more than you could ever imagine - they know when you are truly scared.

Although my Molly is very small, I believe she would do her best to protect me. She might lick the person to death.:7 No, I'm sure if it came down to it, she would give her life for me. Well, I know she would.

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

Not sure how all dogs are, but a few years ago, there was an article in our local paper about a woman who was unloading groceries from her car, and someone tried to rob/attack her (she had her child with her, if I remember correctly), and the family dog, a lab, jumped the fence and chased the guy. He came back later with blood on him (not the dog's). According to the owners, he was the same as your girl, goofy and obliging. They were shocked, and thankful! They said they didn't even know she was capable of jumping the fence.

Labs usually are protective .. even the funny goofy ones .. I think if it were real danger she would ...

My big babies .. the male would probably kill or at least mame someone if they were stupid enough to try to hurt me .. he is a huge baby and LOVES everyone .. but does not like anyone touching me .. even the DH .. LOL .. he gets in between us on the couch .. LOL . . and will politely remove his hand very gently off my leg if he sees fit .. LOL ..

my female .. very timid .. would never hurt a flea (she hides from people in camoflauge) .. but I feel she would come to my aid .. maybe not as ferociously as the male ..

we actually had one scare .. it was dusk on a trip/vacation we were stopped off the side of the interstate on a remote dirt road .. to check the stuff in the back .. my husband was out of the truck on one side .. I was on the passenger side w/my body sticking out leaned over adjusting something on the console .. Buster (the male) was on the inside back seat ..he started growling (something I have NEVER heard him do) ..his eyes got real big .. and he moved his head next to mine .. I knew something wasn';t right .. I turned and there was a man in a hooded sweatshirt coming right at me .. he wasn't more than 2 arm lengths away .. Buster growled and barked and the guy realizes the DH and HUGE dog was there .. and ran off .. but he was going to get me I do beleive . . my baby protected me! and to this day .. still have never heard the dog growl!!
:D

Interesting stories and obsevations, everyone.

i hope I never have to find out what my dog is capable of!

I truly believe my male boxer would defend me with his own life. I honestly, truly believe that.

Hi Poochy,
What great looking dogs! What breed are they? Bulldogs? I think the pic of them in the golfcart is a keeper for a card. Adorable;-) deb

Hey Deb .. <<<What breed are they>>>>

they are Dogue de Bordeaux's .. French Mastiffs .. otherwise known as Turner and Hooch dogs .. LOL ..

thanks .. ordered the golf cart Christmas cards this week .. think they are going to turn out really cute!!:)

Candy (my girl lab) I don't think she would protect us, but she does bark, on the other hand, Champ(my boy lab,) we rescued him this year,he did not have a lot of people interaction, so when he is in the backyard, he does bark at any one he sees walking by. He also growls at someone that comes in the house that he does not know such as the cable man.. I do feel good about it to a degree, I feel like he would protect us. He now weighs in at 116 pounds!! can we say DIET for him!!

I have no idea whether my dogs would protect me, but I just wanted to say that every time I look at the title of this thread, I think it says "Doggie mushing question".

I have an American Bulldog and an American Stafordshire Terrier (bully breed dogs). They are the sweetest, most loyal dogs I could ask for. Both dogs would lick you to death, however, I am sure that they would protect both the home and my husband and I from danger without question. We are their pack.

We've all lived with dogs so much and have gotten used to them hanging around the family that I think we sometimes forget that dogs are descended from wolves and they still have many of those insticts, especially the ones for protecting family. I have heard that all dogs will bite, but most will only bite after all other warning signs (growls, barks, lunges, stance...) are ignored and the dog feels he/she has no other option to protect himself or the family. I believe that, especially after seeing Tucker defend me against a man who had been threatening me. He did not bite, but he stood directly infront of me, growling and barking at the guy who ended up backing up and running away. Tucker is not an aggressive dog. He's such a super sweet, funny, goofy guy who loves kids and is happiest when the neighborhood toddlers use him as a play ground. They can crawl all over him, pull his fur and ears and he simple wags his butt (Aussies have no tail). He loves people and wants everyone to be his friend. So, absolutely, I think your lab will defend you.
