Dog - UTI - ACV

MAYNARDSMOM

Cathlete
I think my 2 yr old lab, Maggie may have a UTI. I have never experienced this myself let alone w/a dog. I called the vet & they said if I can get a urine sample I could bring it in or bring Maggie in & they could get one. Ever tried getting a urine sample from a dog ?
We're leaving for vacation Sat & I have someone coming here to stay with the dogs. I need to get this figured out obviously soon. Looking on earthclinic.com I came across giving dogs ACV (apple cider vinegar) mixed with yogurt. Everyone says it works there. has anyone here ever tried it w/success? Any other home remedies would be greatly appreciatedH

Tami, I have lots of experience with this- too much LOL!! My vet gave me a contraption to catch Muffie's urine in. Essentially, it is a measuring spoon taped onto the end of tongue depressors. It's hard for me to describe. The measuring spoon needs to be deep enough to catch and hold the urine. The tongue depressors are added on so you have "reach" so to speak. So when you take your doggie outside when she squats to urinated you have to be quick and get the spoon under her and catch. You could probably use other things around the house to catch it with. HTH and doesn't confuse you.

My boxer girl is having bladder problems. We think it may be serious(cancer).
I can't get a urine sample. She stands up the minute I come near her. She looks at me like, "Hey, that's a little too personal!"

My vet has to take it from her. I'm sure it's not pleasant. My vet tried to get a sample by catching it, and she did the same to him. She's just too much of a lady I guess:p

We are back in the vet's office tomorrow. I'm sure he needs to take an ultra sound. Her bladder walls are thickening.:(

Walk the dog onleash and use a soup ladle. If she refuses to pee at first, take her back in the house and walk again later onleash. Eventually she will pee despite the "company".

If she has crystals, sometimes a change in diet will help. Different crystals form at high or low pHs and you can choose a food that results in a more balanced pH and eliminate crystals that way too.

My boxer, Gunther, had a UTI once. I just caught the urine sample with one of those large plastic disposable beer cups when he lifted his leg. :D

We treated it with antibiotics and it cleared up quickly.

{{{{{hugs}}}}} Cynthia - I hope you find out what's going on with your girl soon.

Thank you everyone! I am now pictureing all of us tough Catheites walking around behind our dogs trying to get some pee.
I have been using a soup ladle also. With no success, she is looking at me with that same look of your dogs - "What's up with the ladle Mom?"
Tried giving her the ACV - Not so much!
No fever, she had the look when the thermometer came at her too.
The reason I am suspecting a UTI is the past 2 nights she has been up 3 x's during the night to go out. That's just not like her.

Thanks for your help - looks like Imay be going to the vet.
Will let you know how it goes.

Hope you get it figured out before you leave on vacation. My dog had one awhile back. She was squatting to tinkle several times when she was outside so I knew something was up. I took her out on a short leash with a cool whip bowl in hand. Just slipped it under her right after she squatted. The vet put her on anitbiotics for 21 days. I thought that was an awful long time.

Never would have thought of the soup ladle idea. Remind me never to eat soup served by a fellow animal lover from this site. LOL.

LOL!

I can't believe what I'm about to share.....

I have several stainless steel bowls in my cabinet. My boxer children eat/drink from them. My son's ex-gf was in my cabinets getting a bowl, and ask me which bowls were human and which were for the dogs?
I said, "Umm, there is suppose to be a difference?!"
In my defense, ALL my dishes are ran through a heated water cycle in my dishwasher.
I'm sorry, but my boxers eat from our bowls:eek::eek::eek: What can I say, they are my kids!
Now, I don't have one soup ladle in the house:D:D

I am Victorious !!!!!! We have urine !!!
The sad part is that was the highlight of my day. I followed the leash advice & she finally couldn't hold it any longer - I got myself a good sample, saving $50 at the vet for them to get it.
I'm going to drop it off tonight & she has an apt in the am if they still need to see her. Hoping they just write me an antibiotic.
:D:D:D:D:D

My dog just got finished with a treatment of antibiotics for this. My husband got the urine sample by sliding the dustbin underneath her and catching it. He is pretty proud of his innovation. After a 10 day course, she is good as new. She was so sad the first day because she felt so bad. The cat did not understand and was trying to romp with his buddy and she would have nothing to do with him. But 24 hours into the meds and she was back to her old self.

That's great Tami!!
Anytime you can save money at the vet's office. They have a way of pile on the charges don't they?

Let us know how it goes tomorrow.
I'll let you know what my vet says about Mercedes. She's playing and in good spirits. She super excited about Santa!
I swear, she is truly my daughter with fur. She loves new toys and she knows when UPS delivers a box of them. Just like me:D

Update

Thought I would let you all know how Maggie made out at the vet. Urine came back fine last night. She was up again last night so I kept her apt for this morning. Also took Molly who's had a cough. Myprayers were answered & the vet didn't want to run a bunch of test & just gave me an antibiotic for them both which I have promptly started. Big releif.

Thanks for all your wonderful wordsof wisdom! & for the laughs with allof us trying to catch pee.

I am late responding to the post and SOOOO glad everything is ok. I have also used dishes to catch the urine .. also have use a papertowel to check for any signs of blood ... antibiotics usually clear it right up!! My baby girl has only had one or two .. I blame the dogfood I had her on.

I am so glad to see that there are people who love their pets as their kids .. b/c mine sure are just like my children .. and they love Christmas .. and yes they check all the packages coming into the house and they have managed to find one of their presents b-4 I could hide it ...they grabbed it and ran ... OH well .. Merry Christmas Big Baby Dogs... LOL!! (something tells me they will be able to find lots more under the tree Christmas day .. Santa will have to be extra good at sneaking it in the house ..lol):p

Glad to hear all is better, Tami!

We recently got a ladle at work to collect urines (had been using a small metal bown prior)....

Being the pun queen, I decided to call it the "pea soup" ladel...

Get it.....hardee har har...oh, I just kill myself, lol:p

And being a vet, I must say that I am surprised your vet charges $50 to obtain a urine? Sure this isn't just for the to follow her around - is it via ultrasound and cystocentesis? That may justify it, but not for someone else following her around with a ladel...

Glad you were successful and she's feeling better,
Heidi

Cranberry. It works for dogs just like it works for people.

I have also heard that some Alka Seltzer (one dose, the regular kind, dissolved) works wonders.

I'm home with Mercedes. The ultra sound shows her bladder walls are getting thicker. Mainly the top of her bladder.
My vet wanted to schedule her for a biopsy next Tuesday, but I didn't want her to go through that right before Christmas. She's not in any pain, and she sincerely enjoys Christmas. I don't want her in pain from the surgery for Christmas. Santa has a lot of toys for her this year:)

We decided to try Convenia injection, a super potent antibiotic that stays in the bloodstream 2 weeks. If it's a stubborn infection, her body will respond to this treatment.
If not, we need to biopsy the bladder to determine if it's cancer or chronic inflammatory disease. Bladder cancer is not treatable.:(
