Dog advice - my dog can't quit peeing.

Thanks Cynthia but I feel very bad for offending her. I didn't realize she was a vet but either way I shouldn't have said it that way. I was hoping to make friends but I am just making people mad with my big mouth.

LittleLady - Having a big mouth is kind of a requirement for posting on this forum, so really you'll fit right in in no time! Communicating on the internet just takes some practice. It's not as easy as in person. ;)

Most of us have said (typed) things in a way we didn't mean.
I put my foot in my mouth all the time. You apologized, and that's all you need to do. Just let it go. It will be forgotten.

OOPS, changed "We all" to "Most"- see what I mean? LOL!

It's definitely harder on the internet. I have realized that I can be very rude. I think that I need to grow up a little bit and then come back.

The vet does surgeries all morning so I haven't been able to ask him.
I will update with what he says and hopefully buckeyegirl will tell me what she thinks. I'm a buckeye too.

Hey there - it's ok, Little Lady. No need to rush off with your tail tucked! Apology accepted, so let's move on. I do admit that I am a bit hypersensitive to blanket statements regarding my profession - you are not the only one that has done some "vet bashing" on here. I need to toughen up a bit, too, I suppose;) I do realize there are idiot vets out there - just as in every profession like someone else said.

Let me know what your vet says about your four legged kid:)

My first thought was diabetes because I have it on the brain. Most of my family is obese and has type 2.

The vet went from surgies to the field without calling me back. He works on every type of animal. The secretary said to bring in a urine sample. Is that it? Do I have blood work done now or wait for the results.

Different subject:
A different vets secretary told me that you can't give a dog heartworm meds until they are a year old. So I had that on my mind when I got Maby (said like maybe) so I didn't start her on it until the new vet brought it up. He said that was very bad info. I guess it's just the heartworm test that can't be done until a year. I didn't ask him to explain it because I was so mad. Any explanations for me? When I got her she was shivering in a barn and covered in ticks. I wouldn't be surprised if she has heartworms since she was always outside. Her mom was covered in large ticks and very thin. It was very sad and that's why I named her Maby.We just kept saying maybe this and maybe that and I guess it stuck.

WorkingtobeFit

I read the article. She doesn't drink a lot. Actually she doesn't drink very much at all and that is why the amount of pee confused me. She is extremely energetic and seems very healthy except for this urine thing. Does the blood test uncover diabetes? I'm assuming that it does.

I'm planning on dropping the urine sample off as soon as I figure out how to get it. I don't know if I should do something else immediately. She is fine now.
He is a very busy vet and is usually hard to get a hold of. Maybe he will call later.

As long as she's acting fine, just start with the urinalysis first. She energetic, feels good, eating well and has no concurrent increased thirst. It's highly unlikely to have a diabetic dog at 8 mos especially with no signs other than increased urinations.

At this point, we can only speculate and let our minds take us to places and worries that are unfounded. Get a urine sample (place a shallow plate/pie dish/butter dish under her just as she squats - all that is needed is about a teaspoon of urine) and take it into your vet. Start there. Stop reading more into it than it probably is ....the internet is a dangerous place and too much information can be dangerous:eek: The fact that she's feeling good and her activity level hasn't changed all bodes well for her.

Okay-thanks, I will drop it off in the morning. Do you know why I can't test her for heartworms yet? I read that you shouldn't give a dog heartworm medication if they have them. I'm giving it to her with no idea if she has them. It is all very confusing.

My dog went through some trouble peeing all the time a while back. When I took her to the vet the way they took a urine sample was quite easy. They took her outside and as soon as she started going to the bathroom they stuck a big ladle in the stream. Filled that spoon right up and it was big enough that it did not spill. I know it might be trickier with a male dog though.
She ended up having a bladder infection that anitbiotics cleared up. She had just gotten over a liver problem caused by eating poison mushrooms ( we think) that caused severe central nervous system problems. since then she still has some problems with balance when she gets overly tired.

LOL about the ladle - we use one too at work. I call it my "pee soup" ladle...:p

As far as heartworm goes, all dog should be placed on heartworm prevention if you live in a heartworm endemic area (which OH is since you said you were a buckeye;)) I place puppies on it at their first puppy visit and then actually don't test them until their next annual vaccination/wellness visit. The reason you don't test puppies is because it takes about 6 months from the time they are bitten by an "infected mosquito" to the time they actually test positive for HW (the HW goes through several larval stages but actually don't mature into adult heartworms in the heart until 6 months later and this is what the test actually tests for - mature female worms in the heart) If I have a pet that has been off for an extended period of time, or unknown HW status, these get tested prior to going on HW prevention. No need to test any puppy under 6 months of age.

That's good that you have her on prevention. Most protect against intestinal parasites as well. Heartworm is a deadly disease - I've seen dogs die miserable deaths from it. It is a preventable disease so HW prevention should be a no-brainer.

Stepping off soapbox...hope I answered your question:)
