Does estrogen keep you from losing body fat?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and would like to throw a question to someone who has a medical background or someone who is going through what I'm experiencing.

This year I switched from Levlite to OrthoTricyclen Lite because the former made me break out. The new one helps my skin to a certain extent but I'm usually bloated and it's just harder to melt the flab around my middle.

I have been an avid exerciser for the past 10 years -- aerobics, strength training, stretching (for my osteoarthritis and scoliosis), that whole gamut. I'm also particular about what I eat -- lean chicken and fish with lots of veggies. I even limit my intake of rice and whole wheat bread and substitute those with fruit. I drink lots of soy milk and water. I follow a tweaked version of the Zone diet -- a bit more complex carbs for energy. I do indulge in junk food but in limited portions. I'm 5'1", 105 lbs and a size 4. Sometimes I can fit into a size 2 or 0. I don't do starvation diets and I spend my days running after a 3-year-old.

When I was on Levlite my waistline and belly were pretty trim. Not too shabby, considering that I'm in my 30's and have been through one childbirth. Now, even with more intense routines via my Cathe DVD's (I used to do Gin Miller's or K. Smith's), it seems I have more fat around my middle. Am I just getting old? My arms and most of my legs are trim. There's fat in my butt, my hips and in my inner thighs that never melts away despite the workouts, but my body's been this way for as long as I can remember. My waistline, however, has always been smooth and taut, so you can understand why I'm very self-conscious about my pride and joy. :)

My ob-gyn purposely gave me a prescription for OrthoTricyclen LITE and not its original formula because she said these pills have a lot of estrogen, more than my body has been used to, and she wanted to keep the amount of estrogen low, which is why she gave me Levlite in the first place. I was on Levlite for 2 years before I asked to make a switch. I know estrogen gives women's bodies the softness and femininity that men's bodies don't have. I'm all for that, but please, not in the wrong places! :)

So is this switch in birth control pills keeping me from burning the bulges in the wrong places, or is this just part of aging? I also hear that stress activates the hormone cortisol, which deposits fats around your middle. And my life can be quite a circus sometimes...

I'd be interested to listen to your comments. Thank you.

Hi there Hip..... You did not sign your name. My name is Darlene.
Anyway I was on yasmin which I love, I have heard that it is also a bit of a diuretic. I have also had one child ,29 and suddenly had a bit of a gut that I have never had before. I am 5'2 and 111.
When I started yasmin my stomach was completely flat and cut.
I stopped taking it because my ins covered ortho tri cyclen lite so I figured I would try that. I noticed that my stomach again had that poof and also my hair had started to fall out alot! I got off after 2 months and have been back on Yasmin with the same results that I have had in the past. I guess we all react differently.
Take care!
Darlene

Hippa,
I don't think so, I am 43 soon to be 44 and have 2 sons 20, and 17 been married 22 yrs. I have been on Ortho Tri-cly for I think 3 yrs now, kind of lost count lol. I started Cathe's exercises in April, in March I weighed in at 138, now I am down to 110. So I really don't think estrogen keeps you from losing fat. Probably just need to change your exercise routine around some. I am partial to lifting weights myself ... Rhonda :7 :7

Thank you for the feedback, Rhonda and Darlene. My name is Pinky, by the way. Like "hippahips" its a name one of my brothers came up with (Pinky because my skin was very pink when I was born and Hippahips, from a sudden weight gain in college that made my hips massive) and it's a name that has simply stuck.

Yes, I did notice my hair falling out too with these new pills. I'm seriously thinking of making that switch back to my old ones. Hormones can do really funny things to your body.

I'm also doing more weight training than cardio. I have been using PS Legs in my rotations for the last 6 weeks, and I can definitely see a lot of difference in my legs now than when I was only doing mostly step and squats without the weights. Thanks again for the responses.

I've had the same experience with Yasmin. I asked my doctor about it, but she said women usually lose or maintain on Yasmin. Not my experience at all. I just turned 52 and have been on it for about one and a half years. I can't even remember what I was on before--maybe ortho tri (I have been on so many because of previous bleeding problems which were taken care of with thermal ablation and getting fibroid removal), but my stomach was flat and my muscles were the most "cut" they'd ever been. My skin was horrible though--I kept getting these awful cyst-like breakouts. At least that has improved tremendously, but I certainly don't like the added girth around my middle when I'm even stronger now than I was before. I'd never heard of the ortho tricyclen lite. Maybe I need to check back with my doctor.

I do think higher estrogen levels make it HARDER to lose fat, but still possible. Don't give estrogen the bad rap though..

I just went to my OBGYN in search of a Pill. I am getting off of Depo and want something to give my body an easier transition to being off of everything. So..because of acne he suggested Ortho TriCyclen LO. I believe LO stands for a lower estrogen level than original Ortho Tri Cyclen. The lesser estrogen is supposed to lead to less side effects. However, when we discussed Depo and my weight gain and acne, he seemed to agree that Depo was not the right choice for me. One thing I did not know ( must have missed it back in high school or something), is that apparantly if you do not ovulate, you DO NOT produce any estrogen. My body is suppressing it due to all the progestin I am getting in Depo. You do not ovulate on The Pill either, but estrogen has been put into the pill to mimic your body's own natural processes.

So, if estrogen is to blame, I should not have gained weight and in fact, should have lost it. Like the gyno says, there is no clear answer. Everyone responds differently to EVERYTHING. When I told him last time I went off Depo I bled for 3 months before I got frustrated and went back on it, he said that just because that happened before does not mean that it would happen this time. I walked away from my "visit" more scientifically educated about my own body processes, but definitly got the impression that they know very little how your body will react to anything. That is why when you read the side effects they say "Weight gain" and then "weight loss", "growth of facial hair" and "loss of hair". You know what I mean.

If your other birth control was a lower dosage of etrogen and you KNOW this for sure, maybe it is you need less estrogen. You gotta give each pill some time to really kick in though. I think they said atleast 3 months. If you are still gaining weight switch back. And if you are still gaining weight after that......well, do more Cathe!!! HE-HE

Hi Janice, thank you for the information. I made a mistake referring to my version of Ortho as "lite" instead of its correct term, LO. I am simply very baffled by what's going on with my body. My only prescription meds are my pills and Clarinex, and Clarinex surely doesn't play with your fat deposits. Nothing has changed with my eating habits. So I have this feeling it has something to do with my pills. My ob initially was hesitant about my request to switch from Levlite to Ortho Lo. I've had major acne since I was 9 and Levlite wasn't helping. I'm doing more intense workouts and for longer sessions now since I discovered Cathe but I'm bulging out around my middle, which was never a problem area for me before. I'm hip-heavy, hence my nickname, but I've gotten used to that. :) Yes, I guess we all react differently to hormones. And yes, I read so many conflicting reports about the effects of estrogen that I don't know whom to believe. You're right... the medical community doesn't have any sure answers. I think I need to go back to my doctor and try a different pill. I've been on Ortho for 6 months now. I don't want any more kids (one extremely colic child that landed me in physical therapy is enough for me) but getting a tubal seems so drastic. Thanks again everyone. This is an awesome forum!

Hey, if you don't want any more kids, tubal ligation is the way to go! I think it is always better to get off hormonal methods if you can. Or vasectomy. The only real reason I am going on The Pill now is because of the acne. Hoping it will get better this way. I would really like to go hormone free and may do that after my third sample pack of pills is through. Unless my face clears dramatically and then I think I may stay on it until I get prego. If ever.
