Does anyone take Nexium?

If so, is it something that you take daily long term? I think this is what my dad takes for GERD and I guess I'm getting it too. It's like a gnawing feeling at the top of my stomach which sometimes feels acidic. It's come and gone daily since last Monday night. Food seems to help rather than make it worse. Of course, I have to look up symptoms and everything is attached to the big "C." So I'm trying to talk myself down from that. Over the past several months, I've had several stressful weeks with an injured dog which affected my appetite, then what I percieved to be relationhsip issues, which affected my appetite. So I'm trying to decide if I have had "unexplained weight loss." I think I've lost maybe 10 pounds over the past few months. I've tried on about every pair of jeans I own hoping some would still be tight (they were) so I wouldn't think I had the weight loss issue that is also associated with the big "C." My jeans do have stretch in them but they get very loose pretty quickly. I do need to lose weight but it's scary when you really aren't trying and I don't know what I weighed before the stressfull issues. Anyway, back to the Nexium.....

Kim, I have been taking Nexium for 4 years now. It helps a lot. But I still have to be careful about what I eat and how much at once. The big "C" is a chance you take if you don't get the reflux under control. I would bend over to pick up something and it would feel like stuff was coming back up my throat and would burn. And yes there is that gnawing feeling. Large meals, acidic foods, spicey foods, sodas, coffee, tea, aspirin are just some of the things to be avoided. I think most of us have slight weight changes depending on how busy we get. Hope you can get it in check.

That's what is so weird for me right now. Food doesn't seem to be a trigger. I don't get the "stuff coming back up feeling" except for an occasional burp (sorry :-( ) Maybe it's just starting??? I don't want to ghave to go through all th tests and m-i-l is a nurse and she said it was GERD and gave me the Nexium. I've only taken then one but it seemed to get rid of that feeling of a wave of acid. Is it somthing that I'll ALWAYS have to take meds for?

Kim, yes it is something that you will always need to take. It usually takes a bit for it to become effective. If you are just borderline you might try Pepcid or Zantac. I prefer Zantac. My dd is in the medical field and she has told me not to go without the medicine because I don't want cancer of the esophagus.

I took Nexium for 6 months after the diagosis of a hiatal hernia and a stomach ulcer. I took a round of antibiotics for the ulcer and started prevacid for the hernia and ulcer. The hernia reduced itself, though the ulcer persisted for months until the switched me to Nexium. I took that for 6 months and stopped about 2 months ago, when I got pregnant. My advice for you is to please see a dr and make sure you know what you are dealing with. My dh is a Dr. ad he insisted I get all the testing done to confirm what he thought it was, because sometimes when you deal with family you can miss obvious things. I just through that out there so you don't have to suffer any longer than necessary guessing what it is. Good luck! Oh, by the way Nexium worked great, but make sure that you take a multivitamin.

I took Nexium for a couple of weeks, before I had to be taken off of it because it caused hives. I'm now taking Prevacid. I too, like Mikkia, have GERD and a hernia. The two mixed together cause a lot of pain.

Have you been to your Dr.? If not, you really need to call.

I haven't been to the dr because I had to have a thyroid scan done earlier this year, then an MRI for the low back and I'm just so sick of tests. I know I need to though. I think I did find a couple of things that might trigger it: I've been drinking a lot of the diet green tea with citrus. I noticed today after beginning to drink some that it started. I also had a little peice of a brownie too so that may have done it. :) I REALLY don't care for the idea of having to take something daily to avoid cancer. I wonder if some weight loss could positively affect it??

Kim, I'd rather take a pill every day for the rest of my life then end up with Esophageal Cancer. My mom has a friend that is dying from Esophageal Cancer, and it's not a pretty site.

I've taken all kinds of acid inhibitors for the past 4 years. I am currently taking Nexium. My problem is acid in my stomach which gets worse when I lie down (it's down low instead of in my throat). I have been able to start taking the nexium every other day instead of daily. My doctor is stumped as to why I have a problem. I'm just glad the nexium works.

Mine feels lower down as well. It doesn't feel like it's in the throat, and I wouldn't even describe it as a burning sensation. I just hate taking meds because of all the possible interactions. I already take Allegra and I take Ativan (anti-anxiety) sometimes. I guess I'll stop the Allegra. Also, I have to take antibiotics before the dentist. WebMd doesn't list these as being problems if they interact but all these meds together can't be good.
