I don't, but one of my closest friends does. She just got out of the hospital after an 11 day stay because she had such a bad "episode".

She is having a terrible time figuring out what she can eat. She read eat very clean, avoid dairy and starches. Her doctor says the exact opposite. She is so confused and very frustrated. She needs to gain some weight also. After her recent episode, she has lost like 10# that she cannot afford. ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance....

Kim

Hi Kim,

Yes, I have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. My heart goes out to your friend. Inflammatory bowel disease (UC and Crohn's) can be tough to diagnose correctly and to treat.

Regarding doctors and dietary recommendations, I've seen six different GIs since I was diagnosed in 1999 and haven't found any of them to be particularly helpful. Most will tell you diet has nothing to do with UC, which IMHO is crazy.

Many people with IBD have had success following a plan called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. You can learn more about it at the Web site: http://www.scdiet.org. It's not an easy diet to follow, but it's worth it if it will keep your friend off dangerous drugs, out of the hospital and away from surgery.

If you have questions or would like to talk more about this, feel free to email me directly: [email protected].

Hope this helps,

Hi Angela....love that name....that is the name of my youngest. Thanks for your response. I will forward that website to my neighbor. Anything is worth a try at this point. She is so discouraged. She reads about one diet and then she reads something completely different. I'll let you know.

Thanks again,
Kim

Hi Kim,
My husband suffered from severe ulcerative colitis ten years ago and took prednisone in large doses for years (very dangerous drug) causing him to have problems with his bones and joints. He finally had to have two surgeries to make him normal. His surgery was amazing and done by a specialist in NYC called the pull-through. He now is fine, eats anything and changed his diet to mostly organic foods, no meat or dairy (except yogurt) and is doing wonderful. I would contact http://www.ccfa.org/ website and find a support group in her area. That is where we found out all the up to date info on the disease. She can talk to other people with same problem and pick up hints and ideas on how to cope. Good luck.

Hi MaryAnn. Thanks for the information. I will pass it onto my neighbor. She is also on prednisone and she hates it. Her doctor told her she only needed to be on it for 6 weeks. I hope this stays true. She will be so upset if she has to stay on it longer. I'm glad to hear that your husband is doing better. That gives some hope for my neighbor, Diane.

I have Celiac's Disease a condition where there are no celia in the small intestine. Causes all sorts of untold problems.

I agree the Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a good good place to start. The book Breaking the Viscous Cycle used to be available at Amazon.com. It's a very very good book. The website is extremely educational and helpful too.
