Hi,

just wondering if anyone does any yoga/pilates, thr is a lot of hype abt pilates now-a-days which they claim can lengthen ur muscles and help prevent from bulking up. If Cathe had a pilates dvd i would buy it right away, if anyone have any good suggestions, they will be appreaciated, to follow up with this, i looked at karen voight's workouts, she has a total body pilates workout which requires a ring, anyone tried tht, if u have a ring how good is it, is i worth buying??
neha.

I did pilates for a while but once I became pregnant I had to stop afer my first trimester...I plan to pick it up again once I am allowed to begin exercising again. I thought it increased my flexibility a lot along with strengething my core area. I was happy with the results I was getting.

I have never tried the video you are talking about so I can't comment on it. I use Mari Winsor's tapes and like them...

HTH!:)

I have a dvd called Hard Body Yoga with Tari Rose. I love it. It is like a yoga meets strength training workout. It uses no equipment except a mat. It is a really good workout. The first time I did it, I was sore from head to toe!

Agree with you, Sara...love this one too! I try to fit it in at least once a week...another one sort of similar to this one (IMHO) is Bryan Kest's "Power Yoga for Weight Loss", about 40 minutes vs. the one hour for Hard Body. Love both of 'em! :)

I started both about 4-5 months ago on my two off days. I did some one on one sessions w/a pilates instructor at my gym & then bought some home workouts. Aila (mom2bratz) had some really good DVD recommendations. So far my favorite pilates DVD is the MTV mix--it's split into two sections & I do both in one workout & can really feel it in my abs for like 2 days. The Rael series is pretty good too. This w/e I'm trying NY Style pilates--it's called yogalates--so we'll see how that goes. None of these workouts require anything other than a mat.

I really love the pilates--it has increased my flexibility but the biggest benefit I've found so far is how I instinctively incorporate its principles into my normal lifting routine. I've learned how to use my core strength in pretty much every exercise. I personally do not believe in this "lengthening the muscles" thing. Your muscles are what they are--you can build them but I don't see how you can lengthen them any more than you can stretch yourself an inch or two taller.

The yoga's OK. It feels really good but I'm used to really high intensity workouts so to me it's a little wimpy, but it does loosen up the muscles. So far I've done Baron Baptiste for beginners which I really like, & this Sean Corn DVD which bored the living daylights out of me. I think my next try will be the Baron Baptiste yoga for athletes. They're nice, short, relaxing 30 minute workouts.

Anyway, if I had to choose between the two I'd choose pilates. It has some of the same principles as yoga but it has the added benefit of serious core work.

I started w/Karen Voight's Yoga Sculpt to get the basics down w/yoga. Excellent instruction & I highly recommend this one. I've also purchased KV's Yoga Focus that has 30 min. of yoga strength & 30 min. of stretch. Her instructions are top notch, the music, scenery is gorgeous in both DVDs. There's also Ana Forrest's Strength & Spirit that have gotten rave reviews. Eric Schiffman, who's a master instructor has Backyard Beginners & Eric Schiffman is also instructing in Ali McGraw's Mind & Body (can't remember the title) & Eoin Finn's Power Yoga for Happiness just to name a few. As far as pilates is concerned, I've used Hilary Burnett. Again the scenery is serene. Hilary uses candles on her set; very calming & her instructions too are top notch. HTH, Kathy:D

Oh, I will have to try to yoga you suggested. I try to do it once a week too, but I have not in awhile....have been very busy...too busy for this long workout. It seems like it is over an hour. Sometimes, I will do some of the dolphin pushups or downward dog pushups in another workout. I love those!!!

I never got the hang of pilates, but I love yoga. I have quite a few dvd's but the one I reach out for the most is P90X yoga. The first half consists of moving poses that make me work really hard, especially since I do push-ups when moving from planks to upward dog and from upward dog to down dog and back again... works the core pretty well, too. It has about 10 minutes of poses just for core work. And I love the way it loosens my back when I'm done. I just got Tari Rose's Hard Body Yoga. Can't wait to try it.:)

I used to do pilates about three weeks ago and when I tried yoga I liked It so much better. I did Power Yoga Total Body with Rodey Yee. I don't know it you have heard that or not but its about an hour long and he thoroughly does the whole body. He does some positions that I could not even attempt. but overall Its a good workout.
