Hey Jes, living in snow country I can say that it is not the top pick here. I don't know if you need it for 4wd, but I would go with a Toyota 4 Runner or Sequoia over the Ford. Don't get me wrong, people drive them, but they do seem to have problems more than Toyota, Honda and Suburu...which is another top pick. Suburus are the bomb!

My brother totalled an Expedition a couple of years ago. You'd think a big SUV like that wouldn't suffer a lot of damage in an accident, but it did. I had a Toyota 4Runner for a couple of years and I really loved it, but gas prices got insane and I decided to buy a smaller car. I still think about my 4Runner though.

Jeep Grand Cherokee here and I swear by it. I was broadsided by a drunk driver in nov 2003. It went on two wheels but did not roll. 5000 dollars worth of damage but they fixed it and I feel safe in it. Just my 2 cents worth on 4 wheel drives.

GMC Envoy XL here and I love it!! My first SUV. I did extensive shopping around including all Ford products. I just loved everything about the Envoy. The ride is amazing, it is so smooth. OnStar is also a plus.

My husband is a die-hard Ford man and drives an F250 Super Duty crewcab. He about had a heart attack when I bought a GMC product!!!

Jes,
I don't have an exedition but an explorer. We thought we 'needed' it because my husband's commute can be treacherous in the winter (over a mountain etc). We have 3 kids and opted for the 7 passenger.
After having it 3 yrs. (and still loving the way it drives), I can honestly say it's too much car for us. It's a gas hog (and I'm thinking the expedition has to be worse).
7wks. ago, we were in an accident. Someone pulled out of a driveway right into us, totally their fault. $9800 damage to our car and we just got it back from the repair shop yesterday!
OUr next purchase will probably be a Ford Escape hybrid. I know Toyota will be making a hybrid version of the highlander soon and I think Subaru is working on one as well (Lexus has even developed one). Gas prices won't be going down and hybrid technology is only getting better.
I do love my "Clifford" (the big red SUV), but if I had it to do over again, I'd go smaller and more efficient.
Don't you hate when you're excited to buy something and someone tells you not to? x( I'm not doing that, just telling you my experience. All the best no matter what you're driving,
Valerie

Hi,
I have a Ford Expedition I just bought 2 months ago brand new. I have to say it's the best SUV I've ever been in/had. A lot of room especially since I have kids, very smooth and I felt safe in it. As matter of fact, the Expedition is not a gas hog. I just came back from a long trip and it was 600 miles drive. It took us two days to get to the destination and we only stopped for gas once a day. I preferred Chevy Tahoe but we got such a great deal on the SUV especially since it's fully loaded and has a dvd/tv. I do recommend the Expedition. I don't like foreign cars but thats my opinion. I'm all American gal. I wish you a lot of luck shopping around. The newer Expeditions are supposed to be great on the gas.

Take care,
Lisa

Hi Lisa
just curious what it cost you to fill up your tank and what your MPG is? thx.
Valerie :)
Ford does, I think, have the best deals out there for SUVs.

Hi Valerie,
Here in NY where it's so freaking expensive for gas, it costs me $41-48 bucks a week or week and a half to fill it up. My truck is 20/17. The newer models are supposed to be great with gas, rollover, etc. You can even tell the newer models are better than the older models. The older models didn't really look that safe to me which was why the roll-over was kind of high. I think all SUVs and trucks are dangerous as they can roll over but the newer models are sturdier.

Lisa :)

THanks for all the info ladies. i knew you would come through. The expedition is on the same frame as my dh's truck and it costs him b/t $30-$40 to fill up. I only go to town one or two times a week and so that is not one of our concerns. i was mainly referring to the ride and comfort level. we are "American Vehicle" people. In our business i need a lot of space in my vehicle and this one seems the nicest in the American catagories. I found an Eddie Bauer Edition FULLY loaded and it is fine}( appreciate all the input;-)

Hey Jes, we have the Eddie Bauer fully loaded as well. Our car however, is on recall. Is that what they call it? I guess it spontaneously starts on fire! Yikes. I did like the car though. My DH has been driving until the lease is up in August. I've been driving his GM Tahoe. I think I like the way that drives better. My kids miss the DVD player. I told them there's always the scenery outside!:p

You'll really like it, but look into that recall. Unless your buying new.

Hey Lisa,
I'm from NY too! Right over the NJ border, so I'm able to save 20cents per gallon in NJ. As a wise woman once said, "It's a good thing!"

I think part of the point of hybrids is their lessened impact on the environment, no? Not just how long it would take you to recoup the cost.

I'm an American car buyer, too. I know all of the arguments, but the reality is that the majority of the profit per car goes out of country. I'd rather support the US. I live in the Bay Area, so I'm one of the few LOL. Different strokes for different folks.

I have a GMC Envoy and love it, too. I traded my Yukon Denali in for the Envoy - wanted a smaller car. Had the Yukon for 4 years and never had a problem with it. My Envoy is a year old, and I've had similar success with it. Plus I get a lot of compliments on it - it's a sharp looking car.

I am on the local Search and Rescue team and we have both a Tahoe and an Expedition. The Expedition does hold more - quote a bit more. When we were switched from the newer Expedition to the older Tahoe (understandibly, the Sheriff's office gets the newer truck) we had to take out some of the things we used to carry and put them in the RV. They are both great cars, and will give you a great ride. If you like the Expedition, go for it.

Well cars do impact the environment to some degree. So do people every time they breathe in and out. Let's be real here. Few people go to a car showroom looking for the most environmentally friendly car out there. And as for effects on the environment, if you are referring to global warming, well that's just a theory at best that has been discredited time and again and is based on junk science. Unfortunately you will not see the studies which disprove it on your evening news.
You should be more concerned about the asbestos you are inhaling every time someone in front of you uses their brakes.
Back to my point -- you won't recoup your money with a hybrid. You also need to know that, at best, your gas mileage on a new car will only be about 75% of what the sticker states, on average.

I wasn't actually referring to global warming. I was thinking about our blatant over-consumption of our world's fuel resources. But thanks for enlightening me.

Every time I hear someone say that Global Warming is just a theory, I shake my head. The Earth's temperatures are rising. That's a fact. Even the current administration admits it. What's under debate is the cause of this temperature increase. As the effects of this increase will be dramatic, shouldn't we be doing everything we can to keep the increase to a minimum regardless of the cause?

*steps off soap box*

My concern with Hybrids is more safety related. The car carries electrical current and in the right kind of accident, rescue can be next to impossible without electrocuting the rescuer.

And yes, I drive an SUV. As I do Search and Rescue I need to be able to carry my equipment. My commuting car is a much smaller.

>Few people go to a car showroom looking for the most
>environmentally friendly car out there.

I'm proud to say that I went to the car showroom looking for an environmentally-friendly car. No, I didn't buy a hybrid, but my vehicle is ULEV, and my fuel economy is BETTER than what the sticker says (I get 38 mpg on average). I have to commute daily to and from work and I actually care about the impact I have on particulates and toxic gases in the air, and consumption of petroleum products. Global warming certainly isn't the only environmental issue of concern.

That's good for you but I am betting the majority do not do so.
Congratulations on the MPG too, but you are in the minority according to the study I had seen. Like I stated I wish I had saved it to link up in here.
The use of petroleum based products goes far beyond your car I am afraid.
