Does anyone ever GAIN weight???

Just wondering if any of you gained weight after starting with Cathe?? I hear all your wonderful success stories about weight loss, but what about the other side of it??

Since adding Cathe workouts to my routine (which previously included and still does: hiking, running, rollerblading, and biking)I have done nothing but gain weight. I KNOW my diet is cleaner than it was before Cathe and am also know that I can't "pinch" as much fat. I measured my fat and it has not changed, so this is a good thing, yes??? My weight just keeps climbing, although I don't think I am gaining inches. I also feel stronger. At 5'0, I got on the scale this AM and am now pushing 140!! I do cardio usually 5-6 times per week, sometimes less, and although I know I don't eat more now, I am very careful to eat approx. 20 grams of protein at each meal and eat about 4-5 times a day.

So I think I should be very happy with my results being that I seemed to have packed on about 6-7 pounds of muscle in about 4-6 months?? Does that sound reasonable?? I have been looking for info on how fast muscle can be gained if you have a pretty good genetic makeup for it...Anyone know???

I would love to hear anyone else's personal experience with this!! Janice

You say you're eating cleaner, but you can still gain weight if you eat to much of "clean" food. Do you keep a food journal?

You said you're doing Cathe workouts, but does that include her weight lifting tapes? Just trying to get your regimine narrowed down so we have something more to work with.

Honeybunch..

Yes, I do eat cleaner. No I don't keep a food journal. Sometimes I think I should but I HATE that kind of time consuming stuff. Food journals require measurements as well, which I also hate doing every time I eat, although I am a pretty good judge of portion size and know full well when I am going over it!!

I think I always tend to "overeat" as far as clean foods are concerned. That is a seperate issue when I start to try to lean out. What I was saying now though, is I KNOW I don't eat any more than I did before Cathe and if anything my diet is cleaner and scarcer.

I do all the Cathe's, particularly CK, MIS, CM, also Standing Legs...just got IM, MIC, LL, BM, and the wedding tape. My body fat, according to Covert Baileys measurement method is 19%. It was 19% when I started as well, but I am 6-7 pounds heavier. This should make me happy, yes??

My thing was....most of the people on this forum were already reasonably fit when starting Cathe ( I am assuming this if they can do the tapes all the way through)so why all the initial weight loss?? Is it because of the higher intensity cardio?? I seemed to have gained alot of power, but still not lost weight.

As I say, I can pinch less fat so I think the muscle must be packing down. It is possible to displace..where muscle and fat are concered....instead of lose both. Just wanting to know who else experiences this. My muscles are much harder now, so maybe the intramuscular fat is depleting but I have yet to lose the subcutaneous fat??

Your advice is always appreciated, Honeybunch!!! Anyone else????

Do you have the means to get your bodyfat measured professionally? If you try to do it yourself it's not usually accurate. Your local Y can do that.

I know you'd rather not do it, but please just keep a food journal for a week. It REALLY doesn't take long, I promise.

I say throw out the scale and forget about the weight! Maybe you are at the weight you are supposed to be at. The point is you probably look awsome and are much healthier. That is what matters, not the numbers on the scale which really don't mean anything.

Have a nice weekend! :)

Honeybunch..

I would LOVE to have my bodyfat measured professionaly. I have a Bally's membership, but I know the people that end up measuring your fat there are not professionals. They usually are the minimum-wage workers in the club that were trained to do it so that the personal trainers don't have to mess with it. I think I am more of a "professional" than them. I have the accumeasure calipers..the digital ones..and I know the sites to measure, but sometimes you want a "professional" to do it, like you say..

Once, a body fat hydrostatic lab on wheels came to Ballys and I had it measured in there. They immerse you and all that and give you a readout. I was 13% way back then. I would like to do that sort of thing again, but have NO CLUE as to who to call or how to get a BF test. Who does that sort of thing, do you know?? I would just go to a doc, but can you do that even?? Maybe you can give me some advice....I live in Phoenix...Thanks..Janice

The health club chains are not necessarily the best place to get your bodyfat tested as Honeybunch can attest. They have an obvious incentive to give you a high number & then sell diet products & PT training. I have no problem with the PT sessions unless they're sold unscrupously. And this isn't a condemnation of all clubs.

Check Arizona State & local community colleges. The jc I attend has a fitness certification program & one can get a fitness assessment including the dunking bodyfat test. They need practice so it's usually easy to get in. The student rec center at UC Irvine where I live does the same thing for a nominal fee. UCI isn't exactly a athletic powerhouse so I'm guessing that Az State has a lot more to offer or could send you in the right direction.

Many sports nutritionists (R.D.'s) are pretty darn good with the calipers. It's my understanding that the caliper readings are pretty close if performed by an experienced, unconflicted person.

Yes, Janice. Check with universities. They will usually do the immersion method fairly cheap! It was only $15 for me several years ago at Wichita State!! :)
