I don't sleep on my left side all the time. I alternate from left, right, stomach. Get up to pee. Then left, right, stomach, get up to pee. etc. I don't really get a good nights sleep - couldn't tell you the last time I did.
You don't need to sleep only on your left side. You can switch from left to right (and I suppose stomach if it's comfortable). Even if you inadvertantly end up on your back for a bit, you needn't worry too much. It's not going to make or break your pregnancy, that's for sure. When I was expecting my first daughter, I would get very lightheaded and nauseas if I was on my back for more than a minute or two, so it was easy for me to avoid that position. However, every time I had an ultrasound, the technicians had no problem putting me on my back for 20-30 minutes at a time (even though it was utterly and completely uncomfortable for me!). And the baby didn't stop moving or show any signs of distress during those sessions. Laying on your left side might be the position that carries blood to the uterus the best, but blood certainly gets to the uterus from any position you may be in. So I say - roll over if you're not comfortable!
BTW, you may want to buy a body pillow, if you don't already have one. It makes it much easier to get comfortable, especially as your belly grows.
I will start out on my left side but I switch sides constantly during the night because I always end up in pain in my hips, my back, my legs, everywhere lately! All in all...I probably end up spending equal time on both sides. I think most would find it hard to sleep on one side all night long....
Have a great work out!
